We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vicente De Paulo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Vicente thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
We are living a time of incredible change. Technology is evolving so fast that basically nobody can adapt in the same pace. The new tools that are developed in a flash, overwhelm the image making industries and can create a sense of threat. Since my years in film school and even before that, while working in the Fashion world, I realized that is not the unlimited amount of resources that are fundamental in producing the best work. It is creativity and a wise focus on the essencial that are the most assuring way to a successful result.
So I still believe that I prefer to concentrate on my creative potential, my refined sensibility and emotional engagement to produce things that no necessarily depends on any specific technology.
I can consider all help from the choices of equipment or computer systems, but I will not rely on that wealth to be sure that my work will succeed. That my creation will not depend on that wealth and I will know that I will always have a way to create a meaningful result even within a limited scope of tools.
And most of all that not even the top advanced tool will replace my intelligence and my capacity to articulate my creative skills..
Vicente, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started as a portrait photographer and evolved to work in fashion, specifically fashion magazines. I worked in this industries in NY, São Paulo, Rio and Paris.
I worked with big models, celebrities, artists, musicians and all creative types. I collaborated with Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar.
Eventually Instagram was invented and then Fashion started to change.
I realized that magazines and fashion photography would be challenged. I also realized that I wanted more than just pretty fashion pictures. I felt that my purpose was much more aligned with story telling. So I went to film school.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In this photography period it took me about 10 years to really get to a level where I felt I did not have to doubt my choice. Than again after Film School, though the change of industry is really hard at my age, I feel even more confident that I made the right choice and the best is yet to come.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My first partners I met during my undergraduate years. One of them was in my class. We partnered in our first studio.
