We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vi Nguyen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Vi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
Some of the biggest trends I’ve been seeing in the beauty sphere is a shift in focus on User Generated Content (UGC). For example, when I create a video, I’m focused on how I feel as a first impression in terms of the product experience. This form of content creation is different where it takes into account the sensory, visual details the product does for the person.
The opportunities are that it makes content creation more open and less focused on the likes/follows. I love seeing the focus shift to experiences, community building, and impact.

Vi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
How I got into content creation was on accident to be honest. I started out posting pictures of my favorite Asian Beauty post graduate school in 2017 and started to just learn how to use hashtags. From there, community members began to follow and I got the opportunity to work with a Local K Beauty Community brand called the K-Beauty Collective, which was started by Unity (@unityjackson) and Sumomosuki (@sumomosuki). I got the chance now to review products even though I did not have 1K followers and enjoyed the experience interacting with the community.
From there, I sought to define what my page stood for and learned from fellow creators such as Flo (@theblendedbeauty) how to enjoy creating again and my purpose.
I am a beauty content creator who shares my experiences as a dry/sensitive skin individual to help my community make informed purchase decisions. I also work with brands who align with this purpose to share with the community as well.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience by hashtagging on instagram and TikTok. The power of the “#” should not be underestimated. What this does is increase your exposure as a creator and bring audience members the opportunity to see your content.
My advice is to define your purpose first as a creator and remember to continue engaging with your community and remember who they are.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is to see how much of an impact I made on my community. I feel grateful when one of the community members shared how my recommendation has impacted them positively. These kind of comments make my day.
