We recently connected with Vesper Brandenburg and have shared our conversation below.

Vesper, appreciate you joining us today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?

My parents are my heroes because they instilled the value of hard work in my siblings and I from early childhood. Growing up, the biggest lesson that my parents taught us was about the importance of sacrifice and persevere in all aspects of life. In simpler terms, you get out of life what you give. Moreover, I watched my parents make many personal sacrifices for the benefit of my siblings and I. They both worked up to one hundred hours a week, all seven days, and running multiple small businesses, while immersing us into a fast-paced and forward-thinking reality of discipline and fortitude in the workplace. All in all, their gumshion to serve their community back in my hometown and build a legacy for our family certainly left a lasting influence on me.

Vesper, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My name is Vesper Brandenburg, I am the Owner and Master Stylist of VESPER SALON, and have worked as a hair stylist for over fifteen years. Cosmetology was my calling from early childhood and I was persistent to begin my career as early as possible, at sixteen years old to be exact. I began my career working with John Paul Mitchell Systems, working alongside various platform artists within the brand. I later went on to become a Cosmetology Instructor at a local Aveda Institute. After six years behind the chair, I decided to start my business in 2016 at only twenty-two years old. VESPER SALON is an Olaplex-brand salon and specializes in customized hair coloring and cutting services. I wanted to create a stylish and memorable environment, inspired by my love of music, and so my boutique salon sets itself apart by immersing our salon guests in an audiovisual aura of dance, electronic, and house music. It’s like stepping into a time machine and going back to the 90s when your best friend played MTV all day and all night long, all while getting your hair done. Conversely, my salon strives to provide excellence, technical skill, and five-star customer service. I am most proud of the relationships that I have developed over the years with my salon guests and their continued support for myself and VESPER SALON.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

Back in 2020, I was humbled and overwhelmed by how tremendously my industry was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. With regards to my industry specifically, the unprecedented situation pushed me to adapt quickly and pivot in order to continue working when able to do so again. Prior to that experience, I took my abilities to work and express myself creatively for granted as burnout and long hours tend to do. However, after being unable to service clients for twelve weeks, it catapulted my creative inspiration like a return to form, motivating me to work as hard as I possibly could to prevent my business from any pandemic-related financial setbacks. For a few years thereafter, I was working 12-15hrs a day in the salon, up to 80 hours a week. It was the hardest, most tiring, and most professionally fulfilling time in my career that yielded some of the greatest personal blessings I have experienced in my life thus far.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

It is my belief that providing my clients with consistent technical skill and customer service has helped my business build its reputation within my local market. Subsequently, I am overjoyed when I have out-of-state clients returning for visits, as well as first-timers traveling from other states after researching local salons in my area. I find that leading with kindness, humility, and respect fosters a sense of trust within my salon guests and inspires the ability to build lasting professional relationships over the years. Lastly, asking for customer reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, and Facebook has also been paramount to the growth of my business over nine years. Ask and you shall receive! I am always stunned by the lovely reviews that people write about their experiences at VESPER SALON and feel tremendously lucky to be able to serve.
