Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Veshone Cunningham. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Veshone , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on has to be my latest album entitled “I’ll Wait”. The reason this was more meaningful than other projects is because God told me to stop doing music. I was being consumed by jealousy, envy, selfish ambition and often compared myself to other artist which would either make me feel superior or inferior and I didn’t want to feel any of these things. God told me to wait so I could grow in him. It was a 2 year process. Coming out of that season I was able to have a better foundation to stand on. I grew a whole lot in character and understanding my strengths and weaknesses. I also had a lot more meaning and purpose in regards to music. I have a different mind set and this wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t waited on God. Therefore the album is called “I’ll wait” for these reasons.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey everyone, My name is Veshone. I’m a Rapper/ Speaker. I got into rapping when i was about 13 years old. Before then I was heavy into hiphop dancing. I made my transition from dancing to rapping with one thought, “Dancers are in the back, I wanna be in the front”. From then I started rapping. I formed a duo with a friend but at 15 I felt like God was telling me to stop rapping, so I did. I gave my life to Jesus and was heavy in reading scripture and learning as much about God as I could. At 16 I felt the passion come back to do music, but it was different than before. In the past writing lyrics was tough for me but when I came back to it at 16 it felt effortless. At that point I knew God was calling me back to do music again. I knew I had a gift. Since then I put out 2 mixtapes, 1 EP, and 2 albums. I’ve toured Canada and have also toured over seas. I don’t know what sets me apart other than my story being mine and no one else’s. My perspective on life is what enriches my music. Everything written by me tells a story of actual things that have happened. Nothing is fugazi. I hope to serve those who I reach through my music by adding value to what they listen too. Not everything has to be so vulgar. My stance on my music is it’s not only good to you but also good for you. I hope to encourage, inspire and motivate people through my music. I’m proud to be part of the 6 repping the 7’s and I’m unashamed about it. Something I would like new listeners to know is God is great and he gave me this gift to serve y’all. So enjoy it. If anyone wants to hear my latest music or follow me my name on all socials are @Veshone.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was thinking people should serve me and the more people are serving me as an artist is proof I’m growing in this business. It was an unhealthy mindset. I thought like this because all other artists I saw either on TV or within close proximity always bragged about people flying them out places and the type of performances they were involved in. I thought to be the a celebrity this is how you had to act. I was wrong. I learned that every person who gives an ear to my music is a gift and that my gift is not to serve me but to serve them. If I’m blessed to be on any stage, it’s with that mindset.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist is getting to see the people who’ve been influenced by my music. When someone tells me a certain song has touched their heart or encouraged them I feel elated. Another rewarding aspect is getting to hit stages and go to new places and use my gift. I’m grateful for every opportunity.
