We recently connected with Véronique Barrillot and have shared our conversation below.
Véronique , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
The main difference with my paintings is a very special ability that consists of painting two subjects at the same time on the same canvas, but they can’t be seen at the same time by the spectators. You see something close becoming something completely different when you STEP BACK.
Collectors are requesting their own two subjects. It’s a new door opening in the art world, which also tells a lot about our brain. That is why neurologists in Lausanne, Switzerland (CHUV), Doctor Olivier Rouaud, and Professor Bogdan Draganski are studying my brain.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
First of all, you must know that I had never been to an art school, not even for one hour. I am a completely self-taught artist who discovered this very special gift: I can simultaneously see and paint two superimposed states, as described by quantum physics. So depending on whether you look from near or far, the viewer doesn’t see the same painting.
For example, you may see Abraham Lincoln, and if you go close to the painting, it becomes Salvador Dali.
You can imagine how surprised I was when I understood, from my little town in Dijon, France, that I was the only one in the world who can paint any two subjects at the same time so that they can’t be seen at the same time by the viewers. This discovery was made in 2015. In 2017, I won the Trophée Jean-Charles Hachet, a European contemporary art prize, and now collectors are ordering their own two subjects.
My work is now displayed in NY at the Gold Coast Art Center, thanks to Jude Amsel, my representative and gallery director, where I am in residency. I am also in residency at Haven Gallery in Palm Beach and Miami. Lausanne (Switzerland) also has a permanent display, as well as Monaco, Dijon, Dubai, and Martigny in collaboration with the wonderful Gianadda collection.
My singular skill has caught the attention of experts from Lausanne Neurosciences Department who are studying my brain imaging. They observed hyperconnectivity and plasticity in my brain, which permits me to combine high and low spatial and temporal frequencies.
It is very interesting to note that you can never take a picture of my work. As close as you are from the canvas, your camera just captures the subject that you see from afar. It is a living experience.
A website will never reflect my work…
I now give conferences about my quantum paintings and the study of my brain.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in life had always been to create my path, not a path that someone would have built for me. I am deeply self-taught. I strongly wanted to create paintings that make people stop, think, and step back. I was actually working on the metaphor of the point of view.
To succeed, I had to listen to my intuition, analyze my perception, and understand, and maybe control, people’s perception.

Have you ever had to pivot?
For 20 years, I worked in management, and I realized that I was leaving nothing behind me despite all the energy it took. I was 40 years old when I decided to become a painter to be able to capture the essence of my life around me. I wanted to have a tangible proof of my existence, and if it could withstand the test of time, that would be even better!
