We recently connected with Veronica Vasquez and have shared our conversation below.
Veronica, appreciate you joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I started my journey in makeup back in 2012, with Special Effects Makeup. Long story short, I used to do work with the church and in a fundraising attempt, we decided to do a “Hell/Haunted House” Maze. Putting everything together in such a short amount of time, from paper to reality, was such a rush. Makeup wise, I had a very specific vision so I knew I had to execute it in my own way. Since then, I’ve never stopped. I started with the bare bones basics. Toilet paper and Elmer’s glue and not much else. It took me 4 years to build the courage to buy professional grade FX products and when I saw the massive improvements in my work just by switching my products, I grew hungry to continue learning more. Beauty makeup followed hand in hand, it was something I HAD to learn in order to improve my FX work. There’s so much of the beauty world that’s used in special effects: color theory, blending, shade matching, precision in application…. and something most people don’t know is that in all of these years, it took me those first 4 to actually begin taking clients. I always want to make sure I’m well versed in what I do before bringing it to another person.

Veronica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Veronica Vasquez. I’m a Makeup Artist, born and raised in LA but recently have moved to Arizona. I’ve been in the makeup industry for over 10 years, and pride myself on delivering the best overall look and experience , catered to YOU. I’ve got a rich history of working on set, with clients such as Disney, and artists such as Slipknot. I’m a former MAC Cosmetics Artist, and a MonsterMaker with Knotts Scary Farm. I also have begun offering virtual makeup sessions: industry grade knowledge in the comfort of your home. I pride myself, in the beauty world, to give you tips and tricks specialized for YOU. What works with your skin type, facial structure, etc, as opposed to just what’s trending. As a Monster Ma͏k͏e͏r, I will bring every nightmare of yours to life. I love the connections that makeup brings, and when you sit in my chair, or in a session, immediately, I want you to feel at home. I also have extensive experience working in Behavioral Health, specifically in Mental Health Treatment. I know how vulnerable getting Yo͏u͏r͏ makeup done , or wanting to learn about it can be and I pride myself in seeing each and every one of my clients as PEOPLE. My goal is to help you see, what I see, when you leave my chair, beauty wise, and to help you transform, or bring to life creatively, Special Effects wise.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Moving from Los Angeles to Arizona was such a massive change for me. The first few months, I was in such a funk, and contemplating whether to continue working in the Makeup Industry or give up altogether. A good amount of my LA clients would continue to message me asking for advice on how to achieve a certain look, what products I recommended, if a product was worth it (pro tip: hefty price tags don’t mean much if the product isn’t right for you). So I changed my approach to begin offering these virtual services. My twist? These sessions are all centered around products that YOU (the client), already own. I will never try to push the trending products, if what you have works for you. I will however, recommend products if what you have on hand, isn’t a good fit. I curate looks specific to your features ,and we go step by step.
Taking this approach to continuing my work in this industry has been so rewarding, as it allows me to fortify my connections with my clients in a more intimate way.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building a social media audience, I believe, is all about being transparent and genuine. As a Makeup Artist, it can seem extremely glamorous , all fun and smiles. But there’s a lot of downtime, periods of time where there’s little to no work or clients coming in. There’s also this stereotype of being “snotty” and “stuck up”as an MUA, and that has never been my style. I’m not into gatekeeping products, or above offering advice. Largely, I think it’s about remaining true to yourself. As a beauty or special effects artist, if you’re just starting out, but your personal style is different than that of the other artists out there, OWN it. I will always remember two pieces of advice given to me: you never know who is watching, and you never know who is listening.
