We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Veronica Lee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Veronica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?

Sonya Dakar in Beverly Hills for my first med spa job was a pivotal experience. Sonya, a renowned figure in the esthetics industry, introduced me to the world of skincare and beauty treatments. Despite the challenges of working in a bustling med spa with high-profile clientele, I found my passion in esthetics. This experience inspired me to pursue my license to become a professional esthetician. The knowledge and skills I gained under Sonya’s care opened up more job opportunities in the field, setting me on the right path.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

As a California licensed esthetician with over seven years of experience, I have honed my skills in acne and anti-aging treatments. I’ve had the privilege of working in various settings, from med spas to dermatology offices, under some of the industry’s best professionals. However, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 led to an unexpected turn in my career. Suddenly jobless, I decided to take control and launched a mobile spa, bringing the comfort and luxury of a spa experience directly to clients’ homes.

One of my proudest achievements is the successful launch of two skincare products – the Midnight Charcoal Cleanser and the Limoncello Super Glow Serum. These products were developed and launched entirely by me, and I am thrilled with the positive response they have received. I am currently working on expanding my product line and look forward to launching more skincare solutions soon. My journey in the esthetics industry has been a blend of challenges and triumphs, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?

If I could turn back time, I would still choose to be an esthetician. The joy and fulfillment I derive from this profession are unparalleled. However, I would make one significant change – I would pursue my esthetician license right after high school. I spent years trying to navigate college and working jobs that didn’t fulfill me. Those years could have been spent honing my skills and advancing in my esthetics career.

Starting at 18 would have given me a head start, allowing me to gain more experience and potentially reach greater heights in my career by now. I cannot stress enough the importance of learning a trade. It provides a solid foundation and opens up a world of opportunities. So, to anyone considering a career in esthetics, I say, don’t hesitate. The beauty industry is thriving and the demand for skilled estheticians is high. It’s a rewarding career path that offers endless opportunities for growth and creativity.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?

The ability to connect with clients and genuinely understand their needs is crucial in the esthetics industry. This is where people skills come into play. Being able to communicate effectively, show empathy, and build trust are key to retaining clients and attracting new ones.

In addition, in today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is a must. Social media platforms are powerful tools for showcasing your work, sharing skincare tips, and engaging with your audience. It’s a great way to attract new clients and keep existing ones engaged. Regularly posting content, responding to comments, and staying updated with the latest trends can help establish your brand and credibility in the industry.

However, succeeding in the world of esthetics is not easy and requires wearing many hats. You need to be a skilled esthetician, a savvy business person, a social media expert, and a customer service professional. It’s a challenging yet rewarding field that offers endless opportunities for growth and creativity.
