We were lucky to catch up with Veronica LaCour recently and have shared our conversation below.
Veronica , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My main draw was intended to be the mushroom witch Hats I’d designed, accompanied by fantasy inspired products I had worked for another artist as my first job and at the time his company had a longer thematic name and a little blurb that explained the name. Combining all of those I came up with The Shop in the Mushroom Woods, a rather long name but one that brings an imagine to mind of what to expect.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
~*~They say, if you go deep into the Mushroom Woods, past the crystal ponds, just before the trees overtake the path, you’ll come across a little shop. Where an ever changing shopkeep can sell you the most wonderful things.~*~
At The Shop in the Mushroom Woods we specialize in costumes and trinkets themed with fairy tales, witches, festivals, and DND.
I have been crafting and creating since I was very young, I learned sewing from my grandmother and started with dresses and clothes for my dolls. As I grew it became costumes for myself and eventually more elaborate cosplays as I got into the convention scene. My first job with another artist involved working booths at fairs and conventions and that truely started the itch to do it myself.
My products are fantasy costume and tabletop accessories, ranging from the mushroom witch Hats, to pouches and bags, dice sets and mimic themed chests. Most of these started as props and accesories for myself and family before deciding to bring them into the product line.
I work hard to have my booth be and experience to anyone walking up, as if you’re really speaking to and shopping from a fairy shopkeeper. I make and modify a lot of my tablecloths and stands to help with that aesthetic.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My best way of meeting new clients has been the anime convention scene. I’ve already had a few repeat customers and people come to show me the outfits they’ve put together with my products.
I’ve just recently started to branch out to Renaissance faire and we’ll see how well we do there!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Perfection is the enemy. Sometimes you want your dry up to look a specific way but that just doesn’t happen. Sometimes you mean to have more of something but the timing just doesn’t work out. It’s okay. Breathe. Stay flexible. And let people help you.
These are lessons I’m still working on almost every event.
