SubscribeWe recently connected with Veronica Jennings and have shared our conversation below.
Veronica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
In 2014, I began researching the use of hair relaxers and dyes and discovered that there were chemicals in them that were related to certain cancers in women (i.e breast cancer). Afterwhich, I made a decision to stop getting my hair relaxed and colored using off the shelf products. Therefore, November 14, 2014, I cut off all my hair hoping to rid myself of all the harsh chemicals. In so doing, I sought out natural remedies for hair care. It was then that I became pregnant with the idea of creating my own natural hair products. This eventually led to the creation and birth of Glory Covering.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
First of all, my name is Veronica Yvette Jennings, and I am a Naturalista. My love for herbs and their medicinal benefits began at a young age when I lived in California. At the age of seven, my mother and grandmother introduced me to herbs and began to teach me about them. As I got older, I held on to their teachings and the belief that herbs were the best remedy for any health-related illness.
As a little girl, whenever I became sick, my mom would get in the kitchen and create some concoction from a mixture of a variety of herbs and administer it to me. As I recall, the taste was horrible! But you know what they say, “If it tastes bad, it must be good for you.” And believe me, they all tasted bad! But after a short while, I would feel better, and my sickness had gone away.
My mother who was a Registered Nurse in Los Angeles California at the time, who knew the benefits of Holistic health. We later relocated to Folkston Georgia. This is where my love for gardening began, planting a variety of herbs. This eventually evolved into lifestyle transformation of eating healthier through the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and of course, herbs. So, the older I got, I learned more about the health benefits and examining what I was using in my hair. This eventually led to my denouncement of hair relaxers and other hair products with harsh chemicals.
I believe that plants and herbs are some of our most potent nurturers and remedies. Our ancestors knew it and we have forgotten. I studied Master Herbalism at the Florida School of Holistic Health where I became a Certified Master Herbalist. With the knowledge learned, I implement herbalism into the products created by Glory Covering. All products are hand-crafted in small batches.
A lot of females use harsh chemicals in their hair regimen unbeknownst to the harmful effects the chemicals have on their bodies. Again, this is what sparked the idea of creating natural hair care products for myself, and later sharing them with other women. What many women do not know is that many of the products sold in stores contain mineral oils and sulfates; all of which cause damage to your hair and skin. With Glory Covering, you can be assured that every item you purchase is made from healthy, natural resources.

We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
Glory Covering has an ecommerce store which is www.glorycovering.com. Another platform we use is Amazon.
Pros and Cons of using a website or selling through Amazon.
Creating product listings in much easier through Amazon than setting up your own website.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Building a loyal client base takes time and effort. And certainly, does not happen overnight. I partner with local businesses such as beauty salons that service natural hair care clients. We network during local pop-up shop venues. I introduce myself at town events and stay current on social media.
