We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Veronica Hynes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Veronica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later

If I could go back in time, I definitely would have started my business sooner. I wanted to join the beauty industry but I was influenced by everyone’s opinion. Everyone always said, “you can’t make money in the beauty industry” or “get a real job you’re guaranteed a paycheck.” So, In 2014 I enrolled in Pharmacy school and didn’t think of the beauty industry for the remainder of that year.
Fast forward to 2015, I found myself looking at peoples eyebrows lol. I know that’s weird but for some reason the first two things I looked at when I met new people was their teeth and then their eyebrows. I used to struggle a lot with my eyebrows, so looking at other peoples eyebrows I could see how creative and distinctive they were. That’s the beauty of art! There is no right or wrong way to doing your eyebrows it’s about who you are, and expressing yourself. That is when I knew I wanted to help everyone achieve their eyebrow goals based on their personality and lifestyle.
But… I had already committed to Pharmacy school and paid for it so I said once I finish Pharmacy school I’ll do eyebrows as a hobby. Once again I didn’t pursue it.

Looking back I wish I didn’t listen to everyone’s opinion about the beauty industry. I wish I went for it and started my business sooner but then again I may have never moved to Texas. Everything happens for a reason and God intended for me to start this past year. As much as I would have loved to start sooner it was not my time, my time is now!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

For those who don’t know me yet, I’m Veronica a Permanent Makeup (PMU) Artist based out of Rockwall, TX. I’m originally from California but before Texas I was living in Oregon. Living in Oregon is when I knew I wanted to be in the beauty industry after a horrible experience with a hairstylist (I’m very sensitive when it comes to my hair due to childhood trauma). My friend convinced me to get my hair cut, mind you my hair was down to my hips. When I got there I asked for a v-cut I wanted to keep my length but layered she said, “ok.” I notice a lot of hair was being cut and she claimed it’s from the top layers so I’m like, “oh, ok” let me let her due her job, right?
She finished and I literally cried. I felt so ugly and bald! The last layer ended by my shoulders and the other layer went across ear to ear length. She only gave me TWO layers!! I lost my confidence, I felt embarrassed I didn’t want to be seen. That was the moment I knew I wanted to be in the beauty industry and help women feel good and confident. I knew I wanted to make a difference in women and men’s lives.

I love what I do!
My goal is to help everyone reach their highest level of confidence. I want to give back to those who have lost their hair or eyebrows due to hair loss, alopecia, or give back what was taken from cancer to make survivors feel whole again and give back some sort of normalcy. <3
I want to make a difference, I truly believe God put me in this world to give back to other and that is my goal!

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

When it came to funding my business I came out of pocket a lot. It was not the smartest thing to do because I used all my saving then began to use my personal CC. I didn’t do my research had I done so, I would have known the basics of being a business owner. I would know there is help for first time business owners, I would know I didn’t have to spend all my savings or use my personal CC. I learned the hard way but it’s ok because I can speak on it and help others avoid my mistakes. Later, I found out I needed to build a Financial Business Plan. This includes your:
– Start up cost
– Funding, do you have it?
– Ongoing costs / Fixed Expenses
– Projects
– LLC / Legal Fees
– Branding / Web Design
– Variable Expenses
Before filing you need to determine legal structure for your business. Do you want an LLC, Sole Proprietor, Partnership, or Corporate. Do you want to hire and run a business or are you planning on being a solo? What’s your end goal?

These are the questions you want to start with when considering being a business owner. Once you have it, start looking for help with funding. You now have your business plan and can present it to lenders or for business grants!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

My knowledge and on going education is what sets me apart from others in my market. I love educating my clients and my goal is to one day be known as a Master Trainer in my market.

Of course, I didn’t do it all by my self. I was able to build my reputation with the help of RBB (Real Beauty Bosses)! They’ve helped me as an individual and taught me everything I needed to know to grow my business and helped me put myself out there to gain exposure.
They are the best thing that happened to me because of RBB I know how to scale my business how to expose myself by getting out of my comfort zone and to stop being scared!!
They focus on getting salon owners and solos to eventually work behind the chair, to gain financial freedom, and help you reach your monthly goals. Their goal is to make as many millionaire as possible with their strategies, and of course as long as you are willing to put in the work it can happen!
