We recently connected with Veronica Abeyta and have shared our conversation below.
Veronica, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
It all starts with a vision or some say a dream. Even though owning a business can can seem out of reach at times, it’s the passion & hustle behind the scenes that make it become a reality! I’ve always loved people & I’ve always loved what I do. It’s never been just a “job” for me. Our industry not only helps the outer beauty we also contribute to people’s mental health by enhancing their natural beauty! The ever learning capabilities in my industry are always evolving, and always changing. Majority of my career has been filled with learning & always leveling up my skill set to always be up to date. This has always brought forth the best experience possible for clients. My desire to have a safe inviting space with dope vibes while empowering women was ignited after the lockdown of the pandemic in 2020. I wanted to not only empower clients that were sitting in my chair but also my fellow artists! I could visualize the events we could have in the space. I wanted to host many different types of classes & have events that brought people together. It all started with doing lots of research! Going down the YouTube rabbit hole: “How to start a business” “What are the beginning steps to owning your own business” “How to find a commercial realtor” these are just a few that I was researching.
I started with creating a business plan & writing EVERY idea down in a notebook.
That little notebook had all the ideas in one spot! The more I wrote the more and more it started to look like a reality. Then it gave me fuel to want to actually start executing.
Veronica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always had an eye for creativity & hair. I actually cut my cousins hair when I was about 10 years old!! It was not very good but I knew there was something brewing inside of me even at a young age! I styled hair when I was in high school for friends/family. I grew up in a small ski town town in northern New Mexico (Taos). When I was a senior in high school I walked in to a successful local salon and simply asked the owner if she liked what she did. She enthusiastically said yes! From our short conversation I knew this was the path I wanted to follow. It seemed to be a world of giving back through beauty & that’s exactly what it is! Living by this simple gesture has been at my core from the beginning. I’ve used my God given talents to serve others through the art of beauty.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
You can’t please everyone & not everyone is going to like you or your “artwork.” I’ve learned through the years that perspective is everything! You win some-you lose some. Owning your losses and remembering that it’s a lesson to be learned.
Picking yourself back up is key-because we will always fall down at some point in our careers for different reasons. It’s life.
However it’s the comeback that counts! For me being re-inspired by taking advanced education classes always inspires me to get back out there & give it my all! Another key factor about lessons is simply being healthy mentally, physically, & emotionally. If I’m conscious & nurturing these aspects of my life I’m truly able to be the best version
of myself. Then in turn being able to give back to others. My faith has always been the driving force that sustains me throughout my journey.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Life throws curveballs. I had a few come at me all at once! My hard work was about to pay off by me sighing my first ever lease on a commercial space I thought I was completely ready for. As we finished up negotiations I got really sick & was hospitalized. By the time I got better & eagerly called to get the ball rolling again I was told they had signed a lease with another business owner. I was crushed.
I got knocked down & it was hard in the moment to think I would find another salon space that was a good fit as that one.
Even though I was upset about it, I accepted it & moved on. I eventually found my current space that was an even better fit for me then the original one! It had so many more benefits to it & it was even in the area of town I had really wanted. It was everything I prayed for & more. Sometimes in the middle of the storm it’s hard to visualize the rainbow that’s coming. But if you hold off & give it a little time the clouds will clear & your rainbow will shine through proving the storm was only temporary.
