Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Vero Perez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Vero thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
My unique perspective on film production sets me apart from others in the industry. I specialize in using vintage, antique, and analog camera and video production gear meshed with , which is a bold departure from the digital age that dominates the film industry today. This approach gives me a distinctive edge in creating a unique style that stands out from the rest.
I combine old and new techniques to produce works that are both appealing to a wider audience and maintain the authenticity and character that only vintage equipment can provide. By using modern rigs and experimental processes, I’m able to achieve the perfect balance between old and new. The resulting grit and grain of my films are a testament to the authenticity and artistry that I bring to the industry.
In a world where modern technology dominates and standardizes the film industry, my focus on vintage tools and techniques provides a refreshing change of pace. My approach challenges the status quo and encourages a return to the roots of film production. With my expertise and creativity, I’m able to create photographs and video that stand out from the crowd and showcase a unique perspective on the craft of filmmaking.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Vero Perez, and I’m a co-founder of Noonlight Studio, a Harlem NYC-based creative media production company specializing in photography, documentary, and antique analog filmmaking and film processing. I got into filmmaking in 2020, when the pandemic struck and I was out of luck with a fresh degree and no work. I phoned a photographer friend and skipped a month of rent to pay for a Sony 4k camera. With that, my first camera, I began filming my very first film project called, “Perspectives.” A documentary series and full-length mashed up of the perspectives of New Yorkers during the hype of the COVID-19 pandemic. It came as a great surprise when I completed and launched the film, and it was at a greater surprise when I won an award for documentary filmmaking and had the privilege of screening my film in the city. Now I feel comfortable in the industry and I now follow my newfound passion for the art of history and my fascination with vintage film equipment. I’ve always been drawn to the unique character and authenticity of films made using analog, and I’ve made it my mission to share that passion with the world.
At Noonlight Studio, we provide a range of services, including creative direction, film production, video editing, and vintage gear and studio rentals. Our clients range from independent artists to large industries in fashion, beauty, business, and more. We work closely with each of our clients to ensure that we deliver the highest quality work and a touch of authenticity that meets their unique demands.
One of the main problems we solve for our clients is the challenge of standing out in an increasingly crowded digital landscape. In a world where everyone has access to the same high-tech equipment and digital editing software, it can be difficult to create content that truly stands out. Our approach to antique analog filmmaking and photography allows us to create content that is truly one-of-a-kind, capturing the essence of the story and delivering a unique visual experience that is sure to grab viewers’ attention.
What sets us apart from others is our dedication to authenticity and creativity. I’m proud to use vintage equipment that has been carefully restored and maintained to capture the same look and feel of films from the past. Our works are a true labor of love, and we’re passionate about sharing that love with our clients and the world.
What I’m most proud of is our ability to capture the core of a story and deliver a unique visual experience that is both authentic and compelling. Whether we’re working on a commercial assignment or a passion project, we always strive to deliver the highest quality work that exceeds our clients’ expectations.
In summary, I’m an artist who is passionate about the craft of storytelling and the beauty of vintage equipment. At Noonlight Studio, we work with antique analog gear, and we’re dedicated to delivering unique and authentic visual experiences that stand out in today’s modern, minimal, landscape. We solve the problem of standing out in a crowded market, and we’re proud of our ability to capture the essence of a narrative and share it with the world.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
I’m happy to write about Violet Guerrero, my business partner for Noonlight Studio. Violet and I first met at City College of New York in the veterans’ lounge, where we discovered our mutual love for the arts. At the time, I was a painter, sculpture artist, and creative director, while Violet was an accomplished photographer, model, and consultant.
In 2019, Violet asked me to model for her film photography class, and it was during this experience that I truly saw her skill, creativity, and passion for her craft. I was immediately impressed not only by her photography skills. I asked her to assist me in production and the rest is history. It was her whom I asked about cameras and from there, I created, “Perspectives,” a documentary series about the perspectives of NYers during COVID-19. Her skill continues to develop before my very eyes as she motivates me to also progress. Today, I see not only her skill but also her work ethic and enthusiasm for her work.
Today, Violet and I run Noonlight Studio, a media production company located in uptown Manhattan. As two women Latinas and veterans, we both bring a unique perspective to the industry and are proud to run a company that is not only successful but also representative of diversity and inclusivity.
Overall, Violet is an integral part of Noonlight Studio, and her dedication to her craft and enthusiasm for her work has been instrumental in the company’s success. Together, we are a dynamic team that delivers good work to our clients while bringing a fresh perspective to the media production industry.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As a creative, veteran, and student of STEM, there are several aspects of my journey that non-creatives may stumble to comprehend. Firstly, the importance of creativity in STEM fields may be overlooked or undervalued by those who don’t have a background in the arts. However, creativity is a crucial component in problem-solving and innovation, and my background in STEM has assumably given me a unique stance that has served me well in my art and career. In the US Navy, as a meteorologist and areographer, I developed an understanding of pressure, temperature, weather conditions, and patterns. To this day, I can forecast quick changes in weather and save thousands of dollars from being destroyed in a late-afternoon shower.
Another aspect of my journey that may be challenging is balancing my military service-connected disabilities, academic studies and interests, and my creative career pursuits. Juggling these responsibilities requires discipline, time management, and prioritization, and it’s not always easy to find the right balance. However, my experiences have taught me valuable skills that have helped me succeed in all aspects of my life. I have more meaningful relationships with people around me, including those I go into business with. I have faced unique challenges when transitioning from military service to civilian life. These challenges may include adjusting to a new culture and way of life, coping with trauma or injuries, and finding meaningful employment. My creative pursuits may have served as a therapeutic outlet during this transition, helping me to process my experiences and find a new sense of purpose. I am thankful that my business partner Violet, also a US Navy veteran, truly understands me on these levels, and it is with great benefit that I have someone so close to me to understand the weight I carry.
Overall, my unique perspective comes from the eclectic list of experiences I have encountered. I feel that that offers valuable insights and perspectives. While non-creatives may struggle to understand some of the challenges I’ve faced and the places I have gone, my experiences can serve as a source of inspiration and enlightenment for others who may be on a similar path. There are options after the military a place without rank, obligated duty, and public shame… please remember that.
