We were lucky to catch up with Verlon Roberts recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Verlon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
It may sound cliche, but every project is meaningful to me. I use myself and a personal connection as my way in when working on a character or writing a story. For example, I recently finished a TV pilot, and it’s about identity at the core. I’m a military retiree, and the day I left active duty, I lost my job, friends, and, most importantly, identity. So, I used this pilot to explore that loss of identity. I decided to wrap it up in a dark comedy about a family each finding their new identity, and I loved every second I spent on it. I am currently working on a spec feature about finding one’s purpose. It’s an action comedy titled Bag of Dicks. Anytime I use my personal life experience and creativity, it is meaningful and something I will always cherish.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a husband, father, and storyteller. I enlisted into the Marine Corps after high school and was exposed immediately to our diverse and exciting world. I gained an endless well of inspiration from this experience. A strong single mother raised me, and I often reflect that in the stories I write. After retiring from the Marines I started my pursuit into the creative world, that has always called me. What sets me apart is my combination of discipline and imagination. I possess a superior work ethic coupled with a strong vision. I have an excellent knowledge of the military world that helps to ensure accuracy in characters and stories in that realm. I have been described as “If John Cena, and Ed Harris had a love child”
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I relate alot of things I do back to teaching my kids about life. I want to be an example to them to pursue something that fuels them. We spend so much of our time at work these days, so that work needs to be inspiring, purposeful, and most importantly fun.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I find that to be the creation itself. Whether it’s giving someone else’s words life or creating a story from nothing on a page, I love that feeling. It’s so powerful to create in this world. I feel creating something is every human’s superpower.
