We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Venissa Spence-Brefo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Venissa, thanks for joining us today. Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?

The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me or the one that stood out the most, was when I was in middle school. I received a shoe box fill with many goodies, I felt appreciated and very excited. It mattered to me so much then and now I want to give a child the same feeling hence the reason behind me doing my own charity.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

My name is Venissa I go by the alias Star. I have always had a passion for make-up and art. As a child, I would watch my older sister do her makeup and when she wasn’t home I would take out all her makeup and put it on my face. I was also fascinated with doing hair, I remember my grandmother Leonie Mavis would allow me comb her hair and braid it. She had long beautiful natural hair and it would take me forever to fix it but I would sit and comb her hair while she told me all her childhood stories. I believe that’s where my love for doing hair came from and motivated me to pursue a career in cosmetology. I am also an Early Childhood Educator. I operate my small family daycare, I love working with children and I am able to balance my passion for teaching along with makeup and hairstyling.

What set me apart from everyone else is my ability to be creative, my passion for art helps me to be unique with styles for hair & makeup.

I am most proud of being a mother of three and a wife to an amazing man who helps me balance motherhood and our businesses.

I’m also proud of my pursuit in being a businesswoman and also being able to give back to the community in a positive way.

How’d you meet your business partner?

I met my business partner who is my husband on a music video set, I was his makeup artist, I guess some would say it was love at first sight. Lol

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is by promoting every day.
