We were lucky to catch up with Venishia Morgan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Venishia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Growing up in Minnesota, I would always look forward to traveling to Mississippi to visit family. I would specifically be excited to spend time with my Grandma Bobbye. She is the baker in our family and as a child I LOVED cake. One summer, I helped her make her famous red velvet cake. I took that recipe and would make it on occasions and soon for friends and acquaintances and would be told “I didn’t like red velvet until I had yours”. Hearing that compliment so often, motivated me to experiment and see what else I could create to change more minds. As I began to take on orders, and they grew in number, I realized that I was in possession of something that could really grow and leave everlasting memories. One of my most favorite compliments is “I don’t even eat cake but I had several slices of yours”. All of that motivates me. Through trial and error, I continued to create more desserts, passionately made with the same love of that red velvet cake I made with my grandma. I’m able to continue channeling that love to all of my homemade desserts that (as my students say) hit different!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Venishia (Vee). I’m a middle school math teacher and I love cake! I’ve always loved cake, and having a grandmother who is a baker, encouraged me to take on the skill myself. I’ve developed into a homemade cake and treat maker, for people who not only desire desserts that are esthetically pleasing, but taste great! I’ve spent many hours coming up with recipes that separate themselves from typical store bought desserts. I’ve been able to take my experiences, as an entrepreneur, and share them with my students, as well as my son. This has been one of my most rewarding and proud experiences. I love working with kids and expanding their thinking. I look forward to discovering ways that my business can have a direct positive impact on kids.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
My mentor suggested a book called Eat that Frog because I have had poor time management. It’s a super quick read…. Well I listened to the audible LOL, so it was a quick listen. It was literally like someone was reading my mind and reading my life choices to me. Anyone looking to find encouragement to stop procrastinating, it’s a great book!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been consistently producing a quality product and maintaining good customer service. Doing right by my clients encourages them to support and send referrals and promote. I love them!
