We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Venice McCormick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Venice, thanks for joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.

We wouldn’t start over. One of the most valuable things we have learned is living our journey every step of the way. We know more about ourselves and the business world by solving complex problems and coming up with unknown solutions. It has had its ups and downs, but we have learned our best lessons through the trials and tribulations. The beauty is in the journey!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

My name is Venice McCormick, and I am the co-founder of Aset Beauty and the founder of KV Talent, based in Denver, Colorado. I possess a genuine love for people, which inspired the creation of both enterprises. During a challenging period of seeking work/life balance in a demanding corporate environment, my son’s unique and spiritual dream prompted me to reflect deeply on my life and career choices, marking the true beginning of my journey.

In 2020, I finally gathered the courage to leave my corporate job and pursue the life I truly desired. Aset Beauty was born out of my passion for the haircare industry and my dedication to making women feel beautiful. We developed a powerful salon-strength system with endless benefits for both hair and scalp. Our commitment to quality, exceptional ingredients, and superior product performance distinguish us from the competition.

KV Talent, although a new company, is backed by my extensive industry experience. As a recruitment and HR consulting firm, KV Talent stands out due to our team’s expertise and the quality of our services. Our talented professionals and years of industry experience set us apart, ensuring we deliver outstanding results for our clients.

How’d you meet your business partner?

Kimberley Hayes and I first met at work when the staffing agency I was employed with assigned me to her account to assist with her staffing needs. Initially, we were just colleagues, but we soon discovered how much we had in common, including the shared experience of being single parents juggling corporate jobs while meeting the needs of our children. Our professional relationship quickly blossomed into a strong friendship as we realized our mutual desire for a career change and a life where we could decide how to spend our time.

Kimberley and I spent countless hours brainstorming ways to leave our corporate jobs behind. Her decision to take the leap first inspired me deeply, and eventually, I followed suit. This journey has been filled with ups, downs, and everything in between, but Kimberley has been by my side the entire time. She has been a true friend, business partner, and a significant part of my entrepreneurial journey.

Through trials and tribulations, we have learned and experienced more in the past few years than in all of our corporate careers combined. I wouldn’t change a thing, as the true power lies in the journey and what lies ahead. Kimberley remains someone I admire greatly, and her influence has been invaluable to my path in entrepreneurship.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.

We chose not to manufacture our own product due to the high cost of raw materials. Our commitment to quality led us to seek a manufacturer who could ensure consistent excellence in every product we distribute. However, finding a manufacturer within our budget proved to be a challenging and lengthy process.
Our search for a manufacturer willing to produce smaller unit orders took over six months. Initially, we reached out to various businesses in the United States, but all were beyond our budget. Frustrated, we expanded our search to China, but concerns about potential risks, as advised by our lawyer, prompted us to consider Taiwan instead. Yet, we still lacked confidence in moving forward.

Ultimately, we returned to the United States and explored the possibility of manufacturing in-house. Despite the high costs, we persisted with our search. In a moment of frustration, I even canceled an appointment with a prospective manufacturer. However, this contact later reached out with a recommendation that proved invaluable.

Through this journey, we learned the importance of resilience and perseverance. Unbreakable embodies our experience of stepping out of our comfort zone, tackling seemingly insurmountable challenges, and rising above our expectations.
