We were lucky to catch up with Velvet Daydream recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Velvet , thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
There is nothing that makes us more happy than playing music. It is the ultimate expression of emotion, and we value the ability to create very much. It always feels weird playing a show, and then the next morning going to our other jobs. When we’re on stage it feels right. When we go to work it feels like we’re doing something we weren’t meant to do. Music feels like our purpose in life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Nick (drums, vocals), and Ryder (guitar, vocals), are lifelong friends. In middle school we discovered that we both play instruments, so we began jamming. Around 3 years into that we met our co-guitarist Kaeden. That is when we started taking our band more seriously. It was just us three until this last February, when we met our bassist Jude. Jude was the final piece 0f the puzzle. Since Jude joined the band we have been full steam ahead. We pitched the idea of an album among ourselves around March, and started recording it in July. We finished it and released it this October. Since it’s release we have amassed 40,000 streams. February feels like 5 years ago. We have achieved a lot of personal goals this year that we didn’t expect to achieve.
One of the things that sets us apart from our peers is our image, and musical style. You can instantly recognize us with our long flowy manes, and our bellbottoms paired with heeled boots. We have always looked up to the artists of the 60s/70s, and overtime it became who we are. The authenticity of what we’re doing the main reason this is working. We don’t dress like we do, or write in the style we do because we think it’s what people want. We do it because we love it. We are all proud to be in this band together, and have no plans of stopping this over the coming years.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our goal is to revive rock and roll. Rock music hasn’t been the same since the 90s. It has felt over produced and corporate. Everything sounds like it was made for the sole purpose of making lots of money. We have taken it upon ourselves to revive the art, and expression that rock music used to be about.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part for us has been this last month when we released our album. It has been very exciting to see how people have reacted to it. It has been a weird feeling at times, because some of the songs on the album were written years ago. I can remember humming one of the riffs in the shower. Now it is on a record being listened to by thousands of people everyday. It is very rewarding remembering how the songs came to fruition, to now seeing people enjoy them.
