We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Velora Thomas . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Velora below.
Velora, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea to create an organization of this type came directly from God. I was going through a really rough actually the most painful season of my life and that’s often when we draw close to God the most. So back in 2019, I began seeking God in the solitude of my home through His word, worship and prayer. I fully committed myself to His will for my life. Like Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior did. That’s when the idea to start a r community for women who were like me, traversing through some difficult times and needed some hope and encouragement. So that’s what I did by God’s grace. I started a zoom call and invited women in my circle and then those women invited women. We all gathered together each week on Zoom. That was the first piece of how Godly Girl came about. It has since evolved into a 501c3 organization with virtual weekly programs, quarterly outreach and in person events. Honestly when I started out with this I was like I don’t know how long this gone last but I’m going where God is calling me. I felt peace in the spaces with my community so I just showed up each week in anticipation of what God was going to do. Then the pandemic came and we grew tremendously because everyone was home. during this time, God led me to build a team to run this project. The problem I feel like Godly Girl solves is that it provides women with a non judgmental space to learn, share, grow in all aspects of life not just spiritual but most definitely and importantly spiritually.
I think what makes me so excited about this idea is that I could never imagined me doing it and I didn’t come up with it, God did and everything and I do mean everything He does is good.

Velora, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Velora Thomas, girl from Montgomery Alabama aka the Gump. The bottom of the barrel. Where a lot of slavery events took place. Divorced. Had an abortion. Living pridefully, thinking I had it all together. Doing life my way, disregarding all wise counsel which led me to a humble place where I sought Gods face like never before and that was the paradigm shift in my life. So by trade or vocation, I’m a vocational rehabilitation counselor. I help veterans with severe mental illnesses obtain gainful employment and lead purposeful lives. I’m also a certified recreation therapist, I work with clients who have various disabilities mainly mental sometimes physical make healthy leisure choices and live fulfilling lives. Basically I love helping people.
My gifts from the Lord has led me to coaching leaders, teaching discipleship classes, founding and leading a nonprofit organization, mentoring women on how to live on fire for the Lord and be a woman after Gods own heart. I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m leaning and depending on God to show me the way. I’m not going off of my own will anymore. That’s powerful. What I want the women who are drawn to me to know is that God sent you to me and I’m leaning on Him to show me how to give you what you need to grow in every aspect of your life!

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I think the most effective strategy for the growth in my organization has been doing what God told me to do even when it seems crazy to me and others. Then watching to see how God works in mysterious ways. So keep doing what God tells me to do no matter what it looks like. Leaving the consequences to Him. That’s the best strategy I’ve implemented.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to learn was that this journey is not about me. It’s all about God: it’s all about how He wants to use me for His glory and the good of others and therefore myself. I learned that I can’t go off of how I feel but depend on God to push me forward. Feelings are not facts. Don’t let them have no say so.
