We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Veezy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Veezy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’m one that believes you can learn music, but you were born an artist. I learned music growing up hearing diffrent genres from my parents. Neo soul and rnb from my Mom, southern hip hop and motown from my Dad. I joined the band in middle school and played baritone and trombone. That really helped me with understanding music on a deeper level and knowing how to read it and recognize notes. I didn’t actually record anything in the studio until I was a junior in high school. I feel like my background helped me get comfortable with recording.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Veezy from San Antonio, Texas and I’m and Artist/Songwriter. I’ve been writing music since I was in middle school. I sing, rap and write all my own songs as well as songs for others. I’ve been blessed to live in alot of places in this world and it’s has shaped a truely unique style. There isn’t much I feel I can’t do confidently. I can guarantee I got something for everybody. I currently record at BoomHouse Studios in Bremerton, WA and signed with the independent label Lions Den 360. I have singles multiple singles and an EP currently out right now on all platforms. Got an album on the way, as well as some big features. 2023 is gonna be a good year. Search Veezy on all platforms and stream my latest single “Drumline”
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing for me as an artist is recognition. Having people recognize me or see them singing my songs has got to be one of the best feelings. Having people come up to me at shows and say how much they love my music, seeing them buy merch or hearing them hype me up to people who’ve never heard me. That’s the best part
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As a kid my dad had a saying that always stuck with me; “you are free to make whatever choice you want in life, along as you are willing to face the consequences of your actions. Some may be good, some may be bad, as long as you face them like a man.” That’s always been something I lived by and even tell my kids till this day. I think it perfectly applies to everything in life. Your consequences are a direct result of your choices. All the more reason to make the right choices. I hear it in my head before I make big decisions.
