We recently connected with Veena Sessoms and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Veena thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a fun one – what’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
Most beauty pro disagree with working in a salon . Or look at stylist that does work in a salon as not being successful . But that’s not true at all . You can absolutely be successful at either working in a salon or in a independent suite but they have pros and cons. Working in a independent suite you have more money crossing your hands but you also have more money coming out. So if you don’t market yourself or have systems in place you could be loosing money. You are the service provider, marketing dept, front desk , organizer, bookkeeper, inventory keeper etc. In a salon company everything is done for you with the added benefit of being surrounded by likeminded people and training . I have mentored many stylist in both my salon and outside and have receipts to prove that you can be successful are either.
Veena, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi there, I’m Veena, the face behind Veena b salon], and I’m on a mission to make beauty relaxing and inviting for you.
As a mom to four wonderful kids and a loving spouse, I understand the juggle of work and family life. I have always done hair but my journey into the world of owning a hair salon began as a weekend and evening passion project while I worked a corporate job. Little did I know that this passion would lead me to create a space where fellow business professionals like you could come, unwind, and feel pampered.
Veena b salon isn’t your typical salon; it’s a place where professionals can escape the daily grind, and remote workers can get a dose of relaxation in a warm and inviting environment. We’re all about creating a haven for you to recharge and rejuvenate.
Professionalism and quality work are at the core of what we do. We take pride in ensuring that you not only look your best but also feel amazing!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Being 100% yourself and consistent. It is so much easier being yourself other than a person you think the people want you to be. There is a market for every type of client. Showing up as yourself is less stressful in the long run. You don’t have to continue to figure out what to do next bc you already know bc you are not acting. Once you have that then social media is the way to people hearts but constant quality makes forever clients.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Where do I start. I opened my salon the end of 2017. I lost two children in 2018 , my salon place flooded partially in 2019, Covid happened in 2020, had a baby in 2020, had another baby in 2022, our trailer got stolen in 2023 (with the Salon items in it) . And that’s just the surface level. I was starting to think this wasn’t for me. But I’m still here , open and booked!
