We recently connected with VaShaun J. Pickens and have shared our conversation below.
Hi VaShaun J., thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
The story of PICTOPIA did not start with a business plan. It started with a burden and a belief.
For years, I have been a creative. I am a graphic designer, photographer, marketer, DJ, storyteller, and someone who has always enjoyed helping people see the best version of themselves. Whether I was serving in church, helping an artist launch a project, creating branding for a business, or capturing family memories, I noticed something: people often had great ideas, great talent, and great stories, but they did not always have someone in their corner to help them present those gifts professionally.
At the same time, I saw a need in my community. Not everyone could afford large production studios, expensive agencies, or elaborate event spaces. Many entrepreneurs, artists, churches, and families simply needed a place where their vision could come to life.
That is where the seed for PICTOPIA was planted.
What started as a selfie and content studio became something much bigger. The deeper I got into serving clients, the more I realized people were not just booking a space. They were looking for confidence. They were looking for visibility. They were looking for someone to help them tell their story.
I often say that PICTOPIA is not really about pictures. It is about people.
The journey has not always been easy. There were moments when business was slow. There were moments when bills were due and bookings were not coming in as quickly as I hoped. There were moments when I questioned whether I should keep pushing forward. But every time I thought about walking away, another opportunity, another client, another testimony would remind me why I started.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was that purpose sometimes requires a pivot.
PICTOPIA started as a physical venue, but God showed me that my vision was bigger than four walls. What I thought was a setback became an opportunity to evolve into a creative development and media partner. Today, we help businesses, artists, churches, entrepreneurs, and visionaries with branding, content creation, media production, event experiences, artist development, and storytelling. The mission stayed the same, but the method changed.
Why did I believe I could succeed?
Because I had already been doing the work long before I had the title.
People were already calling me for graphics. They were already asking me to photograph events. They were already seeking advice on branding, marketing, and presentation. The demand existed before the business officially existed.
The logic was simple. If I could consistently help people solve problems, create opportunities, and present themselves professionally, then there was value in what I offered.
The faith part was even stronger.
I believe God gives us gifts not just to make a living, but to make an impact. Every award, every client, every event, every challenge has reinforced that belief. I have learned that success is not just about revenue. Success is helping someone see possibilities they could not see before.
That is why our message at PICTOPIA is: “Seen Different. Presented Professionally.”
Because at the end of the day, whether I am helping an artist find their voice, a business strengthen its brand, a church share its message, or a family preserve a memory, I am doing the same thing I set out to do from the beginning.
I am helping people see themselves differently so they can show up confidently in the world.
That is the heart of PICTOPIA. That is the story. And honestly, I believe we are just getting started.

VaShaun J., love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is VaShaun “Shaun P!” Pickens, and at my core, I am a creator, storyteller, problem solver, and encourager.
I am the owner and visionary behind PICTOPIA, a Creative Development and Media Partner based in South Carolina. While many people know me as a graphic designer, photographer, marketer, DJ, or a serial creative entrepreneur, the truth is that everything I do centers around one mission: helping people become seen differently and presented professionally. My personal motto is to say, “H.I.I. … Help. Inspire. & Impact!”
My journey into this industry started long before I officially launched a business.
Growing up, I was always drawn to creativity. I loved designing, creating, organizing ideas, and helping people communicate their message. Over the years, I found myself becoming the person people called when they needed a flyer, a logo, a photograph, event promotion, branding advice, or someone to help bring an idea to life.
What began as helping friends, churches, artists, and small businesses eventually revealed something bigger. I realized there were a lot of talented people with amazing ideas who simply lacked the resources, guidance, confidence, or creative support needed to present themselves at the level they deserved.
That realization became the foundation of PICTOPIA.
PICTOPIA originally launched as a selfie and content creation venue. “Pic” was a play off not only my last name, Pickens, but it was what we provided… pictures! “Topia” stems from the word utopia, meaning perfect place. PICTOPIA was the perfect place to take pictures! The idea was simple: create a fun and creative space where people could capture memories and create content. But as I worked with more clients, I discovered that people needed much more than a place to take pictures.
They needed strategy.
They needed branding.
They needed marketing.
They needed content.
They needed development.
They needed someone who could help connect the dots between their vision and their presentation.
That insight led to one of the most important pivots of my entrepreneurial journey.
Today, PICTOPIA operates as a Creative Development and Media Partner, serving entrepreneurs, artists, churches, nonprofits, businesses, and visionaries through services such as branding, graphic design, photography, content creation, media production, artist development, event experiences, promotional campaigns, social media management and creative consulting.
Simply put, we help people bring ideas to life because the perfect place to take pictures is wherever your creativity takes you.
One of the biggest problems we solve is helping people move from having a vision in their head to having something tangible that others can see, experience, and support.
Many people know what they want to accomplish, but they are overwhelmed by where to start. Others have a great product but struggle with presentation. Some have talent but lack visibility. Others have a message but need help communicating it effectively.
That’s where we come in.
What sets us apart is that we don’t just create content. We help create clarity.
We don’t just take pictures. We help tell stories.
We don’t just design graphics. We help build confidence.
We don’t just promote events. We help create experiences.
Our clients are not treated like transactions. We become partners in their vision.
I believe that difference comes from my own experiences.
I’ve experienced success, setbacks, pivots, disappointments, victories, and moments when I had to trust God despite not knowing what was next. Those experiences taught me how to serve people beyond the surface level because I understand what it feels like to have a dream and wonder if it will work.
What am I most proud of?
Honestly, it is not the awards.
While I am honored to have been recognized multiple times as Upstate Graphic Designer of the Year, and while I am grateful for every accomplishment, what means the most to me are the people.
The entrepreneur who launched their first business.
The artist who gained confidence in their gift.
The church that reached more people through media.
The family that preserved a special memory.
The community partnerships that brought people together.
Those stories matter more than any plaque on a wall or trophy on the shelf.
I am also proud that PICTOPIA has remained resilient. We have learned how to pivot without losing our purpose. We have learned that sometimes growth does not look like getting bigger. Sometimes growth looks like becoming clearer about who you are and who you are called to serve.
If there is one thing I want potential clients, supporters, and followers to know, it is this:
PICTOPIA is not just a creative business.
It is a ministry of encouragement wrapped in creativity.
It is a place where ideas are valued.
It is a place where people are seen.
It is a place where vision meets execution.
Most importantly, it is proof that your story, your gift, and your dream matter.
Our slogan is simple:
“Seen Different. Presented Professionally.”
Because when people see themselves differently, they begin to show up differently. And when they show up differently, amazing things can happen.
That is the work we do every day, and that is the legacy I hope PICTOPIA continues to build for years to come.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
One of the greatest blessings in both my life and business is my partner, Kimiko “Kimi” Pickens.
Kimi and I built our relationship on faith, trust, friendship, and a shared desire to help people. While I am often the visionary behind PICTOPIA, Kimi helps bring those visions to life. As a talented makeup artist, she helps clients look and feel their best. She also assists with posing, client experience, event setup, breakdown, and all the details that help create a polished final product.
She keeps me grounded, organized, and on schedule when my creative mind is racing with new ideas. Her servant’s heart, work ethic, and willingness to do whatever is needed have been invaluable to our success.
I would also be remiss if I did not recognize our cousin and business partner, Douglass Gamble. Douglass is our right hand man and one of PICTOPIA’s biggest supporters and assets. Whether it’s offering advice, lending a hand, opening doors, setting up events or simply showing up when we need him, he has consistently been a source of encouragement and strength.
The truth is that PICTOPIA has never been a one person operation. While my name may be attached to the vision, Kimi and Douglass, my mom and dad, and other family members have helped carry the mission. Their belief in me, their commitment to excellence, and their willingness to serve have played a major role in helping PICTOPIA become what it is today.
As Scripture reminds us, “Two are better than one… for if they fall, one will lift up the other.” I have been blessed to have people in my corner who continually help lift the vision higher.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was believing that I had to do everything myself.
For a long time, I wore every hat: designer, photographer, marketer, event planner, setup crew, cleanup crew, and problem solver. I thought being a strong entrepreneur meant carrying the entire weight of the vision alone.
The backstory is that when you’re building something from the ground up, especially with limited resources, you learn to become self sufficient. But over time, I realized that doing everything myself was limiting both my growth and my impact.
God taught me that vision is often bigger than one person. That’s why people like Kimi and Douglass and others have been such blessings. They reminded me that asking for help is not weakness, it’s wisdom.
Today, I understand that the strongest businesses are not built by individuals. They’re built by teams, partnerships, and people who believe in the mission together.
