We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vante Mack a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vante , thanks for joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
So, everyone automatically assumes when looking at me that im this cliche rapper about making music about drugs, money and women. I couldn’t be further from that. My music and my character has morals within it. Growing up I was always charismatic and got along with everyone. Yet, it always seemed as if those friends had their own groups of friends and I wasn’t in them. I went to parties in high school but majority of the time I showed up alone. Don’t get me wrong or anything I wasn’t a loser to an extent. Girls liked me and I put in work but nothing had substance you know. Girls would come over to my house and my mother would never be home and instead of doing all of what most teenagers would be thinking, it was none of that. Most girls loved my music and the deeper songs would cry and open up to me about their life and battles. You gotta think im 15, 16 years old and they opening up to me, me!! Due to my music. I felt something and knew I had something. Some girls even tried to get to me only because of my music. Whatever the motive I wasn’t shit but a weed selling jack-boy. They knew it. but went through hell to get near me and listen to my train of thought. More if I decide to take it. No one thought that the guy they saw in public had his heart on his sleeve. I faked it a bit to fit in but that wasn’t me and I knew it. The real me was intelligent and driven by something bigger . They never understood the real me which leads me to today. The man I’ve grown into and watched progress is something I’m proud of. Ive realized I don’t need to be understood , but they will respect me and my craft. I will single handedly set the world on fire one day. Whether while im living or when I die. They’ll get it when its their time to .
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I actually started writing when I was 8 years old when I saw lil bow wow. My older brother once did music as well which drove me closer. My mother & aunt would play music all the time from the 50’s all the way to the music of that time period. I started venturing off into the world of music for my own taste of what I liked. Eventually stumbled across Chamillionaire of all people. It was cool to me how he had so many styles over so many beats yet the man didnt curse. Now me, I curse like a sailor but he showed VOCABULARY ! I was in the 7th grade impressed. By high school im rapping at lunch with the homies having battles and what not. Met a group of Mexicans from Guadalupe AZ of all placed. They did music as well and went to the same school who then put me in the studio. They helped me perfect my craft and its a wrap from there. Ive been going hard every since
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I just need connections. Once I have the connections the sky is the limit
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The reaction from the fans and people who support . Without them the boat doesn’t leave the dock. So inspiring them knowing I put some encouragement in somebody heart is the best feeling.
