We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Vanna Wrobel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vanna below.
Vanna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I just had my first ever public film screening. I held it at a local bar that the Chicago Film Scene likes to host their meet ups at. I had a ton of anxiety as this has been a film I worked on for two years. I had two co-workers come and support me. They bought me flowers. I never get flowers. I don’t usually want any. But that really really did help. I needed that kind of reassurance.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a film director and producer first and foremost. I have experimented with many roles in video production and found that directing and producing are my favorite parts of a shoot. I wanted to create my own films ever since I was a young girl sneaking off to watch horror films without my parents’ permission. My goal, since then, has been to produce the next scariest thing. I aim to entertain and spook. I am most proud of my three short films I directed and produced during the pandemic. Against all odds, I convinced a group of people to spend their weekends with me to shoot a creepy film and in the end, nobody went home ill! We took all the precautions and continue to do so. I have started a channel on Youtube called Mad Laughter Films. There I will continue to upload videos that spook and thrill my audience.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to create the next scariest thing. I am a huge fan of experimental video art and obscure indie films. I love to see what new digital art is out there. I hope to discover and direct the next frightening film. I’d like to help make scary movies scary again.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I picked up some extra videography work by shooting weddings on the weekends. I thought I would want to start a videography business. I set up an LLC and started to use thumbtack.com. I was offering photography and videography services. I hated it. I could not convince myself to continue spending all my weekends shooting family events. I also found trying to do both photography and videography all on my own was hard. I have since switched to video producing and find it to be more exciting. No longer will I carry heavy equipment around! I have assistants to do that for me.
