Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to ChevyGurl. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
ChevyGurl, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
I was onto to gaining a bigger audience. I was doing shows for hundreds to thousands of people. I was getting my name out there and doing shows. Then one night back in September of 2018, I got into an accident that derailed my life. My car was totaled and I was told that I was lucky to be alive. Had I been in a car that was even slightly less safe I would’ve been dead. I had a long term concussion and my memory was messed up from an undiagnosed brain injury. I wasn’t able to remember my lyrics, parts of my child hood and even sometimes the day before. Even now I struggle with finding the words I want to say. Sometimes they’re on the tip of my tongue but I just can’t pinpoint the word so I throw different words out to describe what I’m trying to say and hope someone says the correct word. I have anxiety and ptsd because of that accident. I haven’t gotten over it, but I learn to deal with it. I know that I’m a fighter and that I have goals, dreams and aspirations and I will accomplish what I was set on this earth to do.
ChevyGurl, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My father used to be a dj and was involved with the squirrel. We’ve always had a studio in the cribo so artist would be in and out recording. I used to sneak in and play with pro tools and their sessions just learning and teaching myself. Then I decided that I’ve been doing the technical side for so long why not write. Thus ChevyGurl was born. I’m most proud of the people that I’ve touched and helped. They’ve helped me as well because they are why I keep pushing forward. I want to gain a following that isn’t afraid to be themselves. No matter how “weird”, quirky, wild they make seem or be called. A space where you can be accepted and just vibe without fear of being judged because no one is perfect. So I don’t think it’s fair to pretend to be so.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best thing that someone can do to support us is to share our work. Not everyone can afford to purchase something and they aren’t obligated to, however, a share is free. Helping us reach more eyes would be wonderful. Even if it’s just one more set of eyes than before. Every set of peepers counts. Every set of peepers matter.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Of course. I want to inspire those who feel that what they want to do is impossible. I want to show them that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. You can do more than you think if you push beyond your limits. Believe in yourself even when others don’t and don’t let a no deter you from your path. I want to be able to put other artist in my position. I want to sign artist to my label and help them make their dreams a reality.
