We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vanessa Rodríguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Vanessa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve always loved to act and perform. It came naturally to me growing up and when I decided to pursue it professionally and full time that’s when I started taking classes. Training and taking classes to learn more, you’re always learning and wanting to get better at your craft. I believe that my journey in pursuing acting happened when it was supposed to happen.
The skills most essential were hard work, discipline, determination, dedication and sacrifice.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Absolutely. I started acting and singing at a young age from being involved with theatre and musical theatre. It wasn’t until about 2-3 years after I graduated from college when I finally decided I was going to go after my dreams and pursue acting. Going after your dreams is not easy and you face many challenges. Having a good support system, networking and staying consistent were very helpful for me when I was starting out. I am most proud that I didn’t let anyone or anything get in the way of going after what I love. It’s not easy, it takes courage and a lot of hard work to do. But if you love what you do, it will all be worth it.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Love this question. The most rewarding aspect of being an artist I would say is giving back to the audience. What I mean by that is, we are story teller’s, we live many lives from the characters that we take on. Being able to make people feel something, whether that’s happiness, sadness, being angry ect. It’s rewarding because we put a lot of work into what we do and when our work is appreciated, it’s rewarding.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I would say simply my love and passion for acting.
