We were lucky to catch up with Vanessa Ozinger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Vanessa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Five Times in One Night
Vanessa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been acting since I was very young. I started in theater, moved on to musical theater, then to film. The acting is a bit different in all three, but I love all in a very different way. Lately I have been doing a lot of theater! The play Five Times in One Night was probably one of the biggest shows. It was an Off-Broadway production of the Comedy play by Chiara Atik, and it was an incredible experience being part of a big production like this. They were auditioning over 250 people and cast 12. The rehearsals were about 6 weeks before we opened with a sold out show. My character was a kind of post-apocalyptic G.I. Joe/Lara Croft and very fun to play, I had the best time. The red carpet premiere was the cherry on top of that whole project. I’ve been very blessed with all of the productions I got to be part of this year, because they were all really great and very special to me. Five Times was just something a little bigger. It was flyered all around NYC, they gave out free condoms everywhere promoting the show (with the print reading “5 Times in 1 Night (but please only use once)”, there were huge posters around the city, and they had a trailer running on Times Square all day. My face was on Times Square -that was huge for me. Because my relatives back home they don’t always understand how big some of my projects are unless they see me in something in Vienna. However, Times Square they were very impressed with, because even they know how big of a deal that is.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Well for each project my goal is to give something to the audience. A laugh, a tear, a feeling, something. But I do not work with the mission to make someone cry when I say a certain line or to make everyone laugh with that fall, because all people are different. And I think every actor who has done theater will tell you that each and every audience is different. They laugh in different parts in different volume, they clap and cheer different everyday, etc. etc. So my overall goal for Five Times in One Night was to give the audience something every night. I mean it was a Comedy play, so of course my goal here was also to make people laugh. But I try not to concentrate on that while performing. During the rehearsal process and even after the first few performances you get a feeling what touches people, how to say things or physically act so they connect more with the story you are telling. But the overall goal that drives me is always to make someone watching me feel something.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It sounds corny and I said it before, but the most rewarding thing about being an actor is making someone else feel something. I think that’s the whole point why artists do art. We express something so others can connect to it. It’s incredible that by telling a story through acting you can touch someone, make them cry, make them laugh, and even effect change. So the most amazing thing for me when I finish a play is if a person comes up to me and tells me they were touched or I made them laugh really hard. That’s the whole point why I do what I do. It’s a tough business to be in and you can’t be in it for the money, because it takes time until you can make a living from it, you can’t be in it for the fame, because that will almost always fade after while. Money and fame can be rewarding too, most certainly, but these things have temporary value. The most rewarding aspect that will always be significant to me is connecting with people through my acting.
