We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vanessa Munoz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Vanessa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
If I could go back In time I would definitely wished I done this sooner. We started working on Mírame Hair Salon May 2021… we officially opened August 2021. I still had my full time hairstylist job and was juggling between the demo, and remodel. Thank God both salons were 4 minutes away from eachothwe so it helped to ge there if the workers needed anything. The beginning of 2021 I was burn out from working but that year I figured out that maybe the salon I was at was not the place I wanted to be at. Then late March 2021, Shawnee (co-owner) called me to ask if I wanted to go in with her and open Mírame Hair Salon. I hesitated but then I realized if it works out great and if it didn’t it was okay. We all have to start somewhere. So the journey began! I think that the time was kinda a perfect timing for me to get out of my comfort zone and just do it. It was now or never. Almoat 5 years down and I LOVE IT! Shawnee has been a great business partner and couldn’t have chooswn anyone better!

Vanessa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
1 month before graduation I decided to go tour Toni And Guy Academy in Carrollton, TX. I was the kid in the family that always enjoyed makeup and hair. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I though to myself if I go to college i would be in debt foreal and more years of school. But I did love making people feel pretty when they would ask for their hair done or makeup.
I provide color, chemical treatments, haircuts, hair extensions and a little sarcasm. ✨️
I just love to connect and create relationships with my clients. And of course LAUGH! I love to create a safe space for my clients and friends. When they leave with a smile on their face is the best thing about everything that I do.
I am most proud of being Mexican/American raised by a single mom. Being a girl and being Latina has been rewarding but also hard. We have to work extra hard to get to where we want to be. I love that I am biligual in Spanish and English. Spanish has helped me help the Latin community and my English has helped me get through life in the US and network with other entrepreneurs.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Running a business and being a mom is so hard. Lol. I love both so I push through. Being behind the chair, booking clients, cleaning, salon maintaince is alot but with having my business partner, Shawnee, by my side makes my life easier. She also does so much so make Mírame can keep running.

How’d you meet your business partner?
I met Shawnee in 2010 in hair school. Funny thing is we didn’t really talk in hair school and even after we weren’t as close but Mírame has brought us close. She has been a delight to work beside ❤️
