We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Vanessa Martinez, Lead Designer at The Picture Framing Co., Santa Monica. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vanessa below.

Vanessa , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?

Learning the design aspect of my job came pretty easy to me as I’ve always had a good eye for design. The rest I learned and the more I practiced the craft the better I got. I can now say that I love what I do and the people I’ve met along the way.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I got into picture framing by chance. My background is in fashion retail management/merchandising. Although I had no clue about this business when I started I do have a good eye and I’m good with people. Once I learned all the technical stuff and got good at what I do I fell in love with it. I get to see amazing art on the daily and get to be creative. The art of picture framing is a skill, and the one on one with the client is key. Each frame is made to order and not mass produced so you get the quality and craftsmanship. When you come for a consultation I can recommend the type of frame, backing, glass, etc. that is best for your art. You can’t get that type of service from an online framer. It’s also just a fun process picking a frame. My clients love it here and I love getting to know them and having them return time and time again.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect of being a creative in my field is the relationships I build with my clients. And knowing that the pieces I’ve helped frame for them will be something they cherish for years and years.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?

You can support artists and creatives by going to their shows, buying and sharing their art via social media platforms, and good old word of mouth.
