Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Vanessa Gyan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Vanessa, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Seven years ago, I launched my non-profit organization, The Sincerely, Vee Foundation and under the organization is my maternal health initiative, The Post Pregnancy Boujie Express. The initiative is focused on supporting mothers and children from low income families. We support these individuals by paying their hospital bills, educating them on the importance of pre/postnatal care, provide them with care packages filled with mommy and baby necessities and celebrate them by throwing baby showers.
While providing care for the mothers and children, we also support various hospitals. In doing so, we provide them with medical devices and essentials needed to give the best care to their patients.
While pregnant with my first born, I saw a huge gap in the maternal heath care sector in Ghana and knew I had to make a difference someway, somehow.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Vanessa Gyan. I was raised in New York City and 11 years ago took the leap of faith and moved to Ghana. My first footing career wise when I relocated was in the media space as I have a degree in TV/Radio Communications from Brooklyn College and had the hands on experience working in the industry while in New York. I worked full-time in the Ghanaian media space for 5 years before venturing into the entrepreneur life. Shortly after leaving the media space, I began creating content independently. In between creating fresh content, I was also focused on my nonprofit organization, The Sincerely, Vee Foundation.
Over the past 7 years since branching out on my own, I’ve built more than I ever imagined. I mentioned my nonprofit organization but I’ve also created a mommy lifestyle hub, Modern Day Mom and under this beautiful hub i’ve produced the first ever mommy-related reality show in Ghana, Modern Day Moms of Accra, the first ever mommy-focused podcast, 100% Mommyfied to hosting our fabulous brunches, opening our boutique and I can’t forget, our Modern Day Toddler monthly prayer.
I also have created a skincare line specifically targeted to mothers. The MDM Belly Butter nourishes the belly as it grows and blossoms while expecting your bundle of joy.
Honestly, I’ve living a life I created intentionally. My career aligns perfectly with being a mother to my three wonderful children. I get to do exactly what I love daily being a full-time mom while giving mothers a place to find comfort and safety.
I’ve built something so special not just for me but for the mommy community in Ghana. I’ve won numerous awards over the years and that’s incredible but knowing I’m impacting someone’s life one way or another truly trumps it all.
When I have one on one conversations with mothers who I’ve met at one of our hospital activations or I get a DM saying, “Vanessa, you don’t know how much you’ve helped me with your words of encouragement…”, my heart continues to be so full.
I recently launched The Takyiwa Foundation, a mommy-led, non-profit organization providing education, support and advocacy for premature babies and their families while also supporting NICU’s in Ghana.
Everything I attach my name to is very personal and that is what makes what I do even more special.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Seven years ago, in what would’ve been the height of my career, I was suddenly laid off. Although I was taken by surprise since I was hosting a slew of shows on radio and had a TV show airing, I was also very at ease when it all happened. I knew that would be the time I venture out on my own and create the career I knew was for me. It was a bold step but I knew working full-time in the media space was not where I wanted or needed to be.
It was now time for me to free myself from any restrictions or setbacks and not other prove to others but prove to myself of what I was capable of.
I jumped into the deep sea and have been swimming since.
Has the journey been easy? No, but it has been worth it. Had I not been laid off, I may or may not be where I am now, in a place of happiness and peace in my career.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
When it comes to The Modern Day Mom – Modern Day Toddler Boutique, it all began about 6 years ago. I have an eye for picking the best of the best when it comes to mommy and baby necessities. I saw kiddie headphones that I had never seen in Ghana and just knew it would be a top seller.
Now I didn’t have any capital whatsoever so what did I do? I went into the mommy groups I was in at the time and had them pre-order the headphones.
The orders came in like water flowing. With the extra money I was making from the headphones, I used it to stock other products and that’s how my boutique started.
