We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vanessa Campos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Vanessa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The mission to empower women entrepreneurs and small business owners to share their expertise through content and books stems from a deeply personal place. As a seasoned marketing strategist and publishing expert, I’ve seen firsthand how many brilliant women struggle to make their voices heard in the very male-dominated industry of publishing business books. Too often, their incredible achievements and unique insights remain untold, not because they lack the ability but because they lack the platform or guidance.
Helping women translate their business savvy, successes, wins and losses into published works is meaningful because it’s about more than just publishing a book; it’s about reclaiming space, amplifying their voice, and inspiring other women to do the same. Every book we help create is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and drive of those who dare to lead and leave a legacy. It’s a privilege to help them shine and to contribute to a world where their stories create ripple effects of empowerment and change.
Vanessa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Vanessa Campos, a marketing strategist and publishing expert specializing in helping entrepreneurs and small business owners elevate their brands and grow their businesses by sharing their expertise through books and online content. My journey into this industry was inspired by a love for storytelling and a desire to challenge the norms of the publishing world that mostly shares and promotes stories of men business. After years of working in marketing and publishing with big names and corporations, I realized there was a significant gap: many talented, accomplished women struggled to navigate the complex world of book publishing, often feeling their stories didn’t belong, wouldn’t resonate, or that they weren’t enough.
Through my work, I provide full-service solutions that guide clients through every stage of their publishing journey—from ideation and writing to marketing and launch. Whether it’s crafting a compelling business book, creating courses, or developing marketing assets, my services are designed to help clients transform their expertise into impactful products. I solve the challenges of not knowing where to start, feeling overwhelmed by the publishing process, or struggling to position a book as a meaningful tool for brand growth.
What sets my work apart is a personalized, mission-driven approach. I understand that every entrepreneur’s story is unique, so I focus on crafting narratives that resonate with their audience and align with their business goals. My clients don’t just publish books—they create platforms that open doors to speaking engagements, new revenue streams, and enhanced credibility in their industries.
The best achievement in working with clients—many of whom never thought they could write a book—is helping them become bestselling authors. Witnessing them use their books to inspire others, grow their businesses, and position themselves as thought leaders is incredibly rewarding.
At the heart of this brand is a commitment to empowerment. I want potential clients and followers to know that their stories matter, their expertise is valuable, and with the right guidance, they can create something that not only elevates their brand but also leaves a lasting impact. The work is always about breaking barriers, amplifying voices, and creating opportunities for women to shine in spaces where they’ve historically been overlooked.
If you’re ready to share your expertise, build authority, and grow your business, I’m here to help make it happen. Together, we can turn your insights and experiences into something truly transformational.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I first met Dr. Jen Dorsey while working at Entrepreneur Press, the book publishing arm of the business magazine. I was serving as the Marketing and Operations Director, managing the strategy and logistics behind launching impactful titles, while Jen had joined the team as the Editorial Director, bringing her expertise in shaping compelling narratives and guiding authors through the publishing process.
Our professional collaboration began as we worked together to bring books to life, each contributing our unique strengths—my ability to create and execute marketing strategies that elevated authors’ visibility, and Jen’s talent for refining manuscripts into polished, market-ready works. It didn’t take long for us to realize how well our skills complemented each other.
As we collaborated on numerous successful projects, we discovered a shared passion for helping entrepreneurs and business owners transform their expertise into powerful books. We also recognized the need for a more personalized, accessible publishing experience that removed the many barriers of traditional publishing.
This shared vision became the foundation for our partnership as we co-founded Broad Book Group, a full-service publishing firm dedicated to helping entrepreneurs and small business owners elevate their brands and grow their businesses through books and content. What began as a workplace collaboration evolved into a mission-driven partnership that continues to redefine what’s possible in the world of publishing for entrepreneurs and thought leaders.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the idea that traditional publishing is the only “legitimate” path for authors to share their stories. Early in my career, I bought into the narrative that the publishing industry’s gatekeepers—big-name publishers, literary agents, and formal distribution channels—were the ultimate arbiters of what stories were worthy of being told. This belief was deeply ingrained, especially while working in traditional publishing roles, where success often seemed defined by aligning with these established norms.
Adding to this mindset was the stigma surrounding self-publishing, which was often associated with vanity presses. Vanity presses charged authors exorbitant fees to publish their books with little to no focus on quality or distribution, leaving many authors disillusioned. For a long time, vanity presses dominated the conversation around non-traditional publishing, reinforcing the idea that anything outside the traditional system was not legitimate or impactful.
The turning point came when I started working directly with entrepreneurs and small business owners, many of whom had incredible stories and insights to share but felt rejected or overlooked by the traditional publishing system. I saw firsthand how this system often undervalued voices that didn’t fit a narrow mold—particularly women entrepreneurs, small business owners, and people from underrepresented communities. At the same time, I recognized that publishing was evolving, and new models of self-publishing and hybrid publishing were emerging that offered authors control, affordability, and professional-quality results—without the exploitation often associated with vanity presses.
Unlearning the belief in traditional publishing’s exclusivity and reevaluating my assumptions about self-publishing allowed me to see how these alternative models could empower authors. It fueled my mission to help entrepreneurs and business owners create impactful books that serve their goals, whether they work with a traditional publisher, self-publish, or choose a hybrid route.
Letting go of the belief that publishing legitimacy only comes from the “big five” or avoiding self-publishing altogether has allowed me to focus on what truly matters: helping people share their stories, build their brands, and create lasting impact in ways that are meaningful to them. This shift has been empowering—not just for me, but for the clients I serve—because it places the power back in the hands of authors, where it belongs.
