We were lucky to catch up with Vanessa Cabrera recently and have shared our conversation below.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

First, thank you so much for featuring me on CANVASREBEL, this is such a cool idea! I’m Vanessa Cabrera and I am a Master Certified NLP Business Coach, a social media marketing strategist, keynote speaker, corporate trainer and single-momma to my son Matteo. I have been in business for myself for over 11 years now and how I became a business coach has really been an evolution. It started out by my love of email marketing. Back in the day this was one of the earlier forms of online marketing, and when I presented the idea to our Board of Directors, of turning our hardcopy newsletter into an electronic one, it took some convincing, but eventually we got there. After I sent out my first campaign to about 3,000 of our members, our phones and emails wouldn’t stop. They all had the same question. Vanessa, how did you do this? And since that day, I have been consulting and coaching corporations, small business owners and especially women entrepreneurs how to grow their businesses with my proven organic social media marketing and email marketing strategies. What I’m most proud of – I’m most proud of never giving up on building this dream coaching business of mine. Through all the ups and downs I stuck with it because I knew this was going to change lives, and therefore I couldn’t quit. I’m also extremely proud of my clients. One of my clients landed a $396,000 consulting contract! Another client landed two $60,000 corporate contracts and made over $160,000 in less than 90 days. And another made over $36,000 in 4 weeks time!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

I’ve learned many lessons along my entrepreneurial journey, but the one that stands out is the lesson I had to unlearn was that entrepreneurship had to be hard. That I needed to struggle for a long time before becoming successful. This could not be further from the truth!

The real work I had to do was believing that I absolutely could be successful, that it could be easy, simple even. That if I showed up online as the true powerhouse that I am, sharing what I know and informing people how I could help, those I was meant to serve would soon step forward. And step forward they did!

For four years I struggled alone to build this dream coaching business. It wasn’t until I finally set my ego aside and asked for the help I knew I needed. That was the monster turning point in my business.

Coaching works. I asked for help. I did everything my coaches told me to do. I chose coaches who were successful. Coaches who had already built their dream coaching business, so that I could learn everything they knew. And that absolutely got me the business results I had been dreaming about faster. I would have not gotten this far this fast without the help I received.

And I continue to invest in my business through working with different coaches, getting trained on how to become a better coach through NLP, and always continuing to learn new things.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

It’s interesting, once people, especially women hear my story they often ask me, “How did you do it”?

You see, I started my entrepreneurial journey when I was still in my corporate job as a director of marketing. At that same time, I had a side gig where I would create companies’ email campaigns for them. I loved email marketing and back then very few companies were doing email marketing or even understood what it was. I had planned on eventually leaving my corporate gig and doing this full time, but fortunately my journey started earlier than I had expected.

In the fall of 2012, I lost my job. That same week where I was told that my position was no longer available, I also found out that I was pregnant. And once the father found out about the pregnancy, he left me as well. So there I was, no job, no insurance, no money, a baby on the way and completely alone.

I was terrified to say the very least, but something inside me knew I could do this. I was more worried about looking back 20, 30 years from now and wondering what if…than never having the balls to give it a shot.

And so I did. I worked my ass off for those entire 9 months. Building my website, starting my email list, taking any speaking gig I could. I once drove 2 hours, one way to speak in front of two people. I was about 4 months pregnant by then and I cried all the way home. I remember thinking what are you doing?! You need a job! You need money! This kid is coming whether you’re ready or not!

But I kept on, and slowly but surely I started getting more and more clients. I started getting paid to speak. Getting paid to train. And I was loving every minute of it. My new found business not only allowed me to do what I loved to do, but I could also set my own schedule to be home with my newborn son. #priceless

After the second year in business, I kept learning, I kept implementing, I kept pushing myself out of my comfort zone, trying new things. And then social media marketing began to pick up steam and I just intuitively understood it. I then began coaching and consulting on my social media marketing strategies that work. More and more women started to hear of my story and saw my business growing and growing and they wanted that for themselves. And I wanted that for them!

I often say, if there’s ever a feeling inside of you that you were meant for more, an idea, a thought of I could do that too, follow it! Don’t ignore it. That is your unconscious mind trying to connect with you and lead you to exactly where it is you want to go, and she is never wrong.
