We were lucky to catch up with Vandita Parikh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vandita , thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I have been a performer from a very early age, almost 40 years now. In my early twenties, i pursued a career in Journalism and continued my dance journey as a performer mostly as a hobby and simply because that was the only activity i did since my childhood everyday after school . But in 1989,i was given the opportunity to be a dance teacher in GoodShepherds high school in Chennai, Tamilnadu , a substituting opportunity for a friend to choreograph for their annual day program. The joy and happiness i experienced teaching was so inspiring and profound that i felt it opened newer possibilities for me as a dancer. Folk was a genre hardly ever explored in south india where i was born . My choreographies were received by the audience with great enthusiasm and immense respect. These were followed by some memorable accolades and newer opportunities to grow as a performer and teacher. Further inspiring me to establish my dance academy Nruthyashakti in 1994 . Today decades later,
Indian Folk dance , Folk culture and theatre today has become genre that is recognized and equally respected in the dance industry just as any dance form . My dance school has contributed immensely in this regard in the DFw metroplex .
Vandita , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
“Nrutyashakti Folk Academy stands out by offering specialized instruction in Indian folk dances that goes beyond teaching techniques—it fosters a deep appreciation for our rich cultural traditions. Our tailored courses cater to students of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels, ensuring personalized growth and mastery. What sets us apart is our dedication to inclusivity, offering dance therapy classes designed to support individuals across the spectrum and those with diverse abilities. Through initiatives like ‘Dance for Healing,’ ‘Community Service,’ and ‘Dance Back to the Temple,’ we not only teach dance but also enrich our community and promote cultural heritage. At Nrutyashakti, we are committed to empowering our students through dance, nurturing both their artistic talents and their connection to our heritage.”
Nritya Seva initiatives at the academy provide high school students and youth with opportunities to give back to the community through arts education and programs that connect them to various charities and non-profits. This helps them develop an understanding of and accountability to the community. These outreach programs enable them to grow not only as performers but also as active members of society, equipping them with the skills to create a supportive ecosystem for both art and the community..
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Dance, and any form of art, has the power to heal. As dance teachers, it is our duty to spread this power to all those with whom we share our knowledge. Art helps connect, inspire, and empower. It bridges gaps, creates connections, and opens opportunities. Art can communicate without words.
As professionals and promoters of art, it is our foremost duty to make art a refuge—a safe haven where everyone feels welcome, included, and valued. Dance classes and activities should promote holistic learning, growth, and development without judgment or criticism. They should be a place where individuals can express themselves freely, without fear of ridicule or competition. Learning and participation should be encouraged not competition and performances alone.
This defines true success for a dance studio and further promotes continuity and longevity of the learning environment.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Undoubtedly and without any second thoughts, being a dance teacher is the best part of my life. Although I studied Journalism and Criminology, moving to the United States and a chance opportunity led me to teach folk dance. I feel this was the best blessing bestowed upon me. Being a teacher and working in the field of dance allows me to grow as a person, with each day opening doors to creativity and continuous improvement. Work never feels like work. Each day, I approach it with childlike enthusiasm and determination. This passion keeps me motivated and happy. In the process, I create, inspire, and motivate my students in dance as well. Truly, it is a blessing!
