We were lucky to catch up with Vandana Jain recently and have shared our conversation below.
Vandana, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My passion for art started at a young age. While growing up in India, I pursued several creative hobbies, such as collages, fabric painting, and animation. But I ended up working in a more engineering-focused career, leaving my creative pursuits in my free time. I began to consider fine art more seriously years later after my daughter was old enough to attend school. I studied on my own to get more comfortable using different artistic mediums and experimenting with different works. Eventually, I began to take classes to sharpen my skills and dedicated more and more of my time to art.
Vandana, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I primarily create mixed-media and oil paintings of different natural scenes. What makes my work stand out is its vibrant colors and the contrast of realism and abstract textured backgrounds. This liveliness is meant to help viewers feel the importance and joy of living in the present moment.
What invigorated my passion for artwork was living in Tanzania, Botswana and traveling across Africa. I was captivated by the diverse animals and wildlife, capturing photos of all the beautiful places I saw. That experience inspires my artwork to this day, as you can see in my paintings of majestic leopards and exotic birds. I also draw inspiration from my home in the United States, such as birds, bunnies in the suburbs of Chicago and landscapes I’ve seen traveling across the country. I hope people feel the same joy I felt while seeing all these different types of wildlife when they see my colorful paintings.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
My paintings are all about nature and wildlife. It evokes the thoughtful mind of the art admirer and reminds us that we live in a beautiful world that needs to be preserved. The most rewarding part of being an artist is to create paintings that cultivate that sense of joy and connection to Mother Earth, while also raising awareness of the need to nurture her.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I had a lot of concerns when I first started thinking about dedicating myself to painting. I wondered to myself: who’s going to support me? And what should I even start with? Slowly, I started to create more, initially focusing on my resin art and then on my paintings. I shared my work with friends and on Instagram. People gave me positive feedback and one of my friends even ordered a few resin art pieces from me. That support gave me the confidence boost to commit myself to make artwork. My husband supported me financially in the process, which was a huge help. I also sought out mentorship, taking online classes to expand my art skills and support my professional development. Building up my community – through friends, family, and mentors – helped me overcome my initial fears and flourish. That includes participating in my first art show in the suburbs of Chicago, which turned out to be a great success for a first-timer. I’m looking forward to doing more shows in the future.
