Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Valerie Dickson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Valerie, thanks for joining us today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
Every year I have a member appreciation cycle ride during the month of my birthday in July. I give out goodie bags to my fitness members. We have a live DJ, class is an hour long, and we get to take pictures, sweat, and ride! If it was not for my fitness members I would not be where I am today!
Valerie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am most proud of my networking connections I have made throughout the fitness industry. I have been featured in two previous articles, and I am also competing for Ms. Health and Fitness. I came into the fitness industry when I had weight loss surgery and realized I needed assistance to get my weight under control. I started by building mental and physical wellness programs throughout various school districts, and then created my brand and garage gym during the Covid-19 pandemic.
I assist fitness members that have different journeys and come from all different backgrounds. One of the things I love about being a fitness instructor is that everyone has different goals and motivations and teaching a collective group of people at once who have different goals, but coming together to put in the work. Also speaking with fitness members before and after class is a great way to learn and get to know your members.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I created my own marketing and sales advertisements along with my logo and slogan. I work at various gym facilites and pass out flyers and promote myself on social media. Word of mouth is the best way business owners can grow.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I have multiple jobs and I utilized my primary job income as a public school educator to successfully fund my business. I have created my own website, received my LLC, purchased equipment such as speakers, cycle shoes, fitness clothing, traveling fitness storage, microphones, and other items to perform my group fitness jobs effectively and professionally. and created my own marketing and sales advertisements.
I have also purchased products for my garage gym studio. I am currently competing for Ms. Health and Fitness so I can open a new formal fitness studio with the winnings. The winner of the Ms. Health and Fitness will receive additional publicity by being featured on the cover of a magazine and will have a custom photo shoot and will win $20,000.
So please vote for me to win Ms. Health and Fitness so I can open my very own fitness studio to assist with bariatric weight loss patients! Vote the link is below!
