We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Valentina Kamenova. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Valentina below.
Hi Valentina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Growing up in the artistic industry, creativity was always a big part of my life, but the first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally was when I was 10 years old and cast as the lead in an Italian two-part mini-series. The experience was so wonderful, and even though I was so young, I loved the process of embodying a character and being part of bringing a story to life. At the same time, music has always been a huge part for me, I began singing practically before I could talk and over time that passion led me to composing music as well. I love both, because both acting and music allow me to express emotions in different, unique ways. They go hand in hand for me. It has shaped who I am and I love incorporating both into my work.
Valentina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an actress, singer, pianist and composer for soundtrack. I’ve always been drawn to storytelling, whether through the emotions conveyed in a performance or the music that accompanies a scene. My journey in the creative industry started at 10 years old when I was cast as the lead in an Italian two-part mini series. Since then, I’ve worked on various international projects including biblical films, Hallmark etc. One of the projects I’m most proud of is my own short film INNER which I wrote, directed, acted in and composed the soundtrack. It explores themes like identity, karma and the inner child. It was a special feeling to see my vision come alive on the screen and getting such a positive reaction from the public really moved me. What sets me apart from others, I would say is my versatility and tenacity. Also being a woman composer I feel sets me apart because I personally haven’t seen many. My goal is to tell stories that leave a lasting impact whether that be through acting, music or both!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is feeling free to imagine and create. I feel like being an artist is being in a different realm. Music and acting for me are a very healthy way to express my emotions and release inhibitions. I can’t imagine doing anything else. Art is my life.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One story that I can think of is while I was working on my short film INNER. The process of writing, directing acting in and composing for the film, I did direct also in Italian which is my second language. While dealing with certain obstacles in post production, I decided to take it upon myself to do the editing and do most of the color correction. So I learned on the job and was determined to finish my short film. There were moments of self doubt but I just kept moving forward. I am very grateful for that because I learned many new things behind and in front of the camera.
