Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Valentina Dominguez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Valentina, thanks for joining us today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
Mama V is nickname that was given to me and the basis for Mama V Events. Mama V Events is a more specific and personal business name, but that hasn’t deterred those around me from supporting and promoting. I am blessed to have the people I do around me. There are so many people that will promote Mama V Events without me having to ask. I have such a supportive group surrounding me that I never have to feel alone with this business. I can post and within a few minutes multiple of my friends have reposted on their stories. They have never asked for anything or expected to get something in return. The people I have surrounding me truly believe and genuinely support Mama V Events and are always willing to help it grow to its full potential. I have friends who are always willing to help an event and won’t even ask for compensation, when compensation is provided it’s just a bonus feature for them. It is rare to have so many people who genuinely care and believe in the business’ potential. I could not be more grateful for the support I receive by so many people on a daily basis. My friends know that if I win, they win, and I will always take care of those around me. To get support, you must give support back and I will always support those who have and continue to support me, in whatever they do. Friend/family support is so important for the success of a business, and it comes from creating and maintaining strong and trustworthy bonds.
Valentina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My involvement with event planning derived from a position I held in undergrad where I would oversee events the organization would host on campus. I kept that position for some time in college and my passion for event planning blossomed from there. I then started working in nightlife in 2019 and started promoting the nights I worked. The passion I had for event planning and working in the nightlife, and getting used to promotions, was the perfect combination to support the start of my own event planning and promotions business. My connections and support group also played a tremendous role in getting the courage to create Mama V Events and plan my first event. My first official event was Demon Time – a halloween party in 2021. Starting off, I realized the best events that would work for me to plan, host, etc… are ones that are nightlife related or holiday themed. The events I host are open to anyone and everyone of age. When hosting a ticketed or entrance fee event, my goal is to make it as cost friendly as possible. For me, it’s about the experience(s) that the guests have and not about the money made. I try to cater to popular demand and pay attention to what generally works and does not work when it comes to things such as themes. drink specials. etc… Hosting, planning and promoting events is something I love to do, regardless of the stress and obstacles that may be faced. I enjoy seeing other people have fun and looking forward to the next event. I’m not in competition with anyone, but myself, and that, along with the aforementioned, is what sets me apart from others. The goal is to give my guests a few hours to have carefree fun and meet expectations. I’m a problem solver and communicator and those two things are extremely important to have in this type of industry. I’m always open to suggestions from anyone who may have some. Letting people know I take full consideration of what potential guests have to recommend, what types of events they’d like to see, etc… is important to build a reputable business and increase the success of future events. Mama V Events is about seeing a vision come to life and ensuring notable events.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
A few months before halloween 2021, one of my brothers reached out to me suggesting a halloween party. Mama V Events was already live and the focus at the time was promoting at the clubs I was working at. I hadn’t figured out what my first event would be until that recommendation was made. Everyone who knows me knows I love halloween. I got a team together and we came up with the name “Demon Time” for the event. I rented out an entire house/ballroom and financed everything for the event from decorations to drinks. Mama V Events was just created and only those closest to me really knew its potential. Demon Time was to be Mama V Events’ first event and available to anyone from anywhere. The pressure was tremendous. So much anxiety and stress came from wanting it to be perfect. My biggest fear was receiving backlash. I had to realize that things can never truly be perfect, but what matters is putting my all into it. I took the risk. I made the event live on eventbrite and started marketing and selling tickets. From the day the event went live there was barely one day where a ticket wasn’t sold. The excited responses I received and revenue made was overwhelming in the best way possible. The event received a lot of attention, reached Bang Energy drink which was present during the event, and even influenced article features. Demon Time happened and received a lot of positive responses. Mama V Events had to start somewhere and Demon Time has now become its signature event. It was the first marketing and sale risk for the business, but the results were great. Demon Time 2022 is on its way (10.28.22) and I’ve already seen excitement for it. The goal was to make a memorable event, one that can be created annually, and the goal was achieved.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
The people on my team are all friends that became family. In this type of industry it’s hard to trust people and have people who truly support. My go-to DJs are considered my brothers, my event set up and promotion team are my best friends and other amazing people in my life. A lot of them who want to be on the team do it because they believe in the business, want to make connections that align with their own type of work/business, etc… It’s important to listen to everyone’s suggestions and create something together, as a team. Mama V is a personal name, but I try my best to make sure that anyone who helps and supports knows that it’s theirs too. We try to stay as positive as possible. A lot of pressure is put on the quantity of attendees and not the quality of the events. I try to maintain high morale by reminding those on the team that it’s about the experience the guests have and making a remarkable event. As long as we can truly say we did our best then the production will always return favorable results.
