Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Valencia Gamble. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Valencia, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue my acting career professionally was when I was in College. I had just transferred schools and decided to minor in Theater because I was already halfway through my Biology major. I remember, the classes that I took became an outlet and a big stress reliever. All I wanted to do was learn more about theater and how I could sharpen my skills. The exact moment that I knew I wanted to actually move to Los Angeles to be an actress was when I took my final exam for my acting 101 class. Our assignment was to find a 2-3 minute monologue and memorize it and act out the scene in front of the whole class. I was more excited than I was nervous and I got up there and it just felt right, very natural and I received an A on the exam. I told myself that once I graduated, I would get a job, save up enough money to move to LA and that’s what I did. I lived in California for two years and came back home to Baltimore right before Covid and then I moved to Georgia to continue my acting journey. That acting 101 class also pushed me to do my first audition for a play at my University, it was Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Ernest. Although I didn’t get the role I auditioned for, and it was the most nerve racking thing I had done at that time, it definitely set me up for what to expect when auditioning for a role.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
If I had to properly introduce myself to people who have never seen my work or have never heard of me before I’d first say “Hello, my name is Valencia Gamble, I am an aspiring actress who will one day get booked for a role that not only inspires the culture but the whole world. And my name will be one of the most talked about to where my introduction would be simplified to just ‘Hello’.” I’ve been pursuing acting since 2017, I’ve worked for and with people that I thought I could only dream of working with, such as Meagan Good, Tyler Perry, Oprah and 50 cent to name a few. I am proud of all my accomplishments and I am looking forward to adding more to that list!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
A lot of non-creatives look at artists such as myself and they see how long the process is taking so they say “you need to get a ‘real’ job.” What they don’t understand is that acting is a real job, it takes time, energy, resilience, and can sometimes be more stressful than a 9-5. When they say those things, they don’t realize how much harm than good they are doing. If you know that someone is pursuing acting all they need is support from the people that mean the most to them. We get enough rejection from auditions, we don’t need it from the people that are supposed to have our backs. This journey is not easy but it will be worth it when you make it to the end of the tunnel. Non-creatives can’t just be there when you’re winning, they need to be there for the losses as well and show support no matter what. If you’ve ever had a dream or a goal in life you know that the path isn’t that smooth.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes! I feel as though if I had of known about Actors Access from the beginning of my career, I could have had more speaking roles when I was in California and Maryland and my resume would have been a lot fuller. I also wish I knew how important having an agent or a manager was earlier on so that I could have been working my way towards obtaining one from the beginning to make looking for jobs much easier.
