We were lucky to catch up with Valencia Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Valencia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
I will give the short version of a long story, I went out of town one weekend and I took pictures. When I came back to work I printed some of them off and was surprised at the reaction I received. I had just transferred to the photo department and mastered the photo machine, the lady that worked in the department next to mine complimented my pictures stating “You did good”. A few days later she asked if I could take pictures. I thought she meant that she needed help with the photo machine. She shook her head no you take the pictures for me. My heart skipped a beat with excitement, I asked her again if you wanted me to take pictures and then she asked me how much. We had a very animated conversation where she told me she was planning to marry the love of her life and it was a secret. I did not know how much to charge and the amount of work it would take. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to capture everything so that one day she could flip through her photo album and smile at all the special moments I was able to capture.

Valencia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Valencia Brown, and my business is Latisha C Photography capturing life’s precious moments is what I am all about. I am a proud mother, daughter, sister, and business owner. I am also studying to be an educator, so my life is whole. I want to fill the world with something they can look at and it inspires uplifts or makes them feel good or at least feel something. I get an idea/inspiration and plan a whole photo shoot in my mind. Whether I am capturing my family, some flowers on the road, or basking in the rays sun. I use my lens to capture what the naked eye sometimes misses.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is seeing the look on people’s faces after you show them what you have created for them. I like seeing the responses that is what makes it all worth it for me.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding yes well I put in a lot of long hours in many departments just to get enough money to purchase my first camera, and I actually sold one camera to get my second one. One day I hope to have all the lenses, lighting backdrops, etc so that no matter what the subject I can capture it. I hope to be able to extend my business to include videography one day.
