We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Valar Morghulis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Valar , appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Being in a metal band, you’re likely misunderstood or mischaracterized by people who are not into that style of music. Especially in our chosen path, which is more on the extreme metal side of things. We’re a blend of death metal, thrash metal and groove metal, with lots of other influences in there as well. Some say we’re evil screaming music or sounds like you’re possessed. It’s expression. And a lot of our lyrics are to make you think. The music in and of itself is therapeutic for us as creators and for our listeners.

Valar , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Valar Morhgulis is a metal band based out of the Charlotte, NC area. We’re a blend of death metal, thrash metal and groove metal. We have a new single releasing on 10/31/25 called Predatory Impulse, featuring Mathis Greene of Aterra, as well as our first full length album releasing in early 2026. We feel like we bring a particularly good blend of all of the styles of metal that influence us. It’s a bit hard to classify what we do into one sub-genre of metal.
People often ask, what does the name mean. And if you’re by chance a fan of Game of Thrones, that is where the name came from. It translates to mean All Men Must Die, which in the end, is the truth for us all. Both the meaning and pronunciation sounded very metal to us.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In today’s market for music, the best way to support artists is to buy their art or merchandise. Speaking for musicians, buy our music. Buy our shirts and any other merchandise. And if you’re not able to do that, stream our music. Share our music. Like and subscribe to the various social media outlets. Every little bit helps.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For us, being able to create music that we love and have other people enjoy it, and to perform before a live audience. To be able to craft the music and lyrics that may speak to someone else is amazing. Playing in front of live audiences is one of the most rewarding aspects. That’s definitely the most rewarding part for us.
