We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Val Childs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Val , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?

Catch Wrestling is America’s Original Martial Art! Our mission at Combat City is to preserve this important piece of America’s heritage by teaching this powerful style of wrestling to the next generation.

Val , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Not only was my father Muhammad Ali’s sparring partner, but he was also trained in Catch Wrestling by the great heavyweight champion, Archie Moore.

Growing up in Milwaukee during the 90’s there was a lot of violence. My father started training me in Catch Wrestling and Boxing at the age of 9 years old so that I could protect myself from the gangs in the neighborhood.

Wrestling is the ultimate form of fitness and self-defense. Combat City offers our members dynamic self-defense training that is based on my lived experiences and a path to unparalleled physical development.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

Combat City is the only independent academy dedicated exclusively to Catch Wrestling in a market saturated by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. On at least 40 occasions, jiu-jitsu practitioners would walk in our gym and challenge me on the mat to prove the superiority of their Jiu-Jitsu. Each time they failed and were submitted in embarrassing fashion. News would quickly spread in the community and would attract new members.

Additionally, the biggest attraction to Combat City is our culture. We are an ego-free environment that fosters a supportive community for wrestlers to develop.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

In an effort to remain independent and true to our vision of spreading Catch Wrestling, Combat City is funded directly by the staff and membership fees. We are the lowest priced martial arts academy in the city of San Antonio because we believe in the dominance of wrestling. Currently we do not have any partners or investors.
