We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Urvika Patil a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Urvika, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I have always been a very sentimental, nostalgic person. I can never go through an experience normally, I always find myself thinking “I’m going to miss this so much” before the moment is even over. In an attempt to remember every little thing. I began taking pictures. When I was younger I filled up my small silver Kodak camera with hundreds of videos and pictures dedicated to my little brother before he was even born. The older I got, the more and more pictures I’d take, candids specifically, at every party, every dinner, every trip, and I’d fill up my phone until the storage ran out, or use up all the film in my camera, or even go through multiple sd cards just to capture the moment. Since then, I’ve made it my mission to “hoard the memories” for other people, and let others enjoy the beauty of every passing moment while still having pictures to look back on.
Urvika, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Photography has always been a big part of my life, even when I was young, because my parents loved taking pictures of anything and everything. When I was 7 I started on a small silver Kodak camera and ran around the house taking pictures and videos to show my little brother once he was born. Once in middle school I joined yearbook and got real, hands-on experience with a camera. I realized very quickly that this was not just a passing hobby for me. This is something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I continued yearbook into high school and fell in love with sports photography, football specifically. I went to every game and realized nothing compared to the adrenaline rush that you get on the field. High school also was the birth of my photography business, which quickly became my pride and joy. I focused on event photography primarily, taking pictures at prom, graduation parties, and dance performances. Once I got to college my business grew even bigger. I let myself get doused in champagne in front of the library just to capture graduates who wanted one last set of memories on campus to remember forever. Over the years, I’ve learned that a lot of clients struggle to explain what they want or what they’re looking for when it comes to photos. As a business owner, I’ve learned it’s important to be able to explain what services I can provide very thoroughly and see if it matches what the client is looking for. A lot of people don’t realize that you can’t book just any photographer and expect back photos that you’d love. Each photographer has a different editing style, specialty, and overall focus that they’ve curated their business towards.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
By far the most rewarding part is seeing clients use their photos long-term. Seeing clients hang photos I’ve taken in their homes, take them to college with them, move houses with them, post on socials for their friends to see, and even just change their profile picture, has all become a culmination of proof that these photos will last lifetimes. I always strive to take photos that will last in photo albums and can be shown to future family, friends, and just become something for everyone to enjoy.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I’ve been running this business for almost 5 years now and I wish I had realized how incredibly vast this community of photographers is. There are so many other business owners out there who are more than willing to share their resources on TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, and their websites. It’s okay to reach out to others and ask for advice! Some of the tips that I use during photoshoots are things I’ve just offhandedly seen on Pinterest by other photographers and it has genuinely saved me in so many situations.
