We were lucky to catch up with Uriel Carrillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Uriel , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I think I started taking photos at concerts and gigs around 2020, but it totally stoped by the COVID pandemic. I return to shooting first at local gigs with local bands in march of 2021.
I actually learned everything by hit-and-miss, at least the first couple of times. After that I started to study and watch other musical photographers and their work. Not only the big ones but also some of the local photographers and how they solved problems about the lighting and the space. That´s how I began to think more about what to capture in those musical events, and after that I just started to experimenting and try different ways of shooting and how to move in that kind of situations.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
First of all, I´m a street photographer based in Tijuana, I´m 25 years ol. I also move around other branches of photgraphy and visual production. Some of the works are like; musical events, coverture of local gigs and concerts, production of musical events, documentary photography and some others.
I think that here in Tijuana there a lot of great photographers, producers and creatives. And there´s a lot of differences between all of us, We all work in different way. Naturally I haven´t really find whats making my work different from others, I think I just do things the way I like it and how I think people will like it, maybe?
I´m really proud about how I been evolving, learning, overcoming fears about trying new ways of photography, returning to my comfort zone wich is street photography and see it with new eyes and learning about that. Connecting with people, that bands and local artist like my work in the concerts and gigs. I think that for now that´s what makes me more proud of my work.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think it´s all about learning and try to see everything and also do as much as I can with anything I have. Never close myself to try and try again.
Always try to find the good thing about what I´m doing, because doing photography of any kind is never an easy way make yourself be on the spotlight. And think if anyone is noticing what are you doing, that´s all you need.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Well the beginning of my social media was really casual, I just keep being consistent and started to learn of new ways for making more atrractive my posting and my photography, also keeping it the way I liked it.
