We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Urban Racing. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Urban below.
Hi Urban, thanks for joining us today. Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
Every business has to start somewhere and it takes time to find the right people for the job. There were multiple changes in ownership and employees for several years before really finding our groove and having a steady team working the events. Our business is quite unique in the grand scheme of things and there isn’t a road map for finding success. You have to adopt trial and error and a lot of hustle to continue pounding the pavement until you find something that sticks. As time has gone on, we have refined our hiring and team building and have a full application and interview process to determine if someone is the right fit to add to our culture and crew. Hindsight is 20/20 and you often have to learn the hard way but that’s taught us perseverance and patience and adds to our satisfaction when it finally all works out. We are very blessed by the team that we have now and wouldn’t change a thing!

Urban, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are Urban Racing – an event host who puts on large drifting, drag racing, burn out, car show, non-stop action events on a regular basis. We have a passion for cars and for drifting and frequently organize fun, legal events for everyone to enjoy. We have contacted dozens of venues within driving distance of the DFW area with the hopes of hosting an event at whatever location will allow us. There are not many places around that can accommodate what we do and it’s always a challenge to consistently grow events near DFW. We are proud that we have been doing this for 6 years now and have overcome so many challenges to be where we are today. The best thing you the reader can do to support us is come out to our events and spread the word so we can continue to grow and put on bigger and better events!

Have you ever had to pivot?
One of our biggest challenges happened in the summer of 2023. We were hosting events at Redline Raceway and had an event scheduled in 3 days when we found out that the property was going to be sold immediately and shut down to build a truck stop. We already had a bunch of tickets sold and lots of people were excited to come out to the event and we had to come up with a quick pivot to move the event otherwise we would go bankrupt and would have a lot of upset people on our hands. With all hands on deck, we quickly were able to secure a date with Texas Motor Speedway and used the track closing as a springboard to help save race tracks and spread the word of what had happened to rally car enthusiasts to come out and support the scene. We ended up with our biggest event ever and it was an all around success!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Reputation is everything in today’s world when it comes to hosting public events. We live or die by the word of mouth of the people who come out to the events. If we don’t sufficiently plan or organize or prepare or staff an event and it turns out poorly, our followers and supporters and drivers won’t want to come back for another event. This means we can’t ever take our foot off the pedal, we always have to be pushing to be better and improve. This can be quite exhausting but also quite rewarding. If you aren’t going to give your best, you’re going to lose your business to someone else who will.
