We were lucky to catch up with Unykhe Edwards recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Unykhe thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
At an early age I knew that I wanted to become my own boss – the idea of working under someone else’s management was not my ideal future, but I had to start somewhere. I used my resources from my 9-5 jobs to not only fund my business but to educate myself. From working as a sales representative I gained the knowledge of how to effectively communicate with customers and solve problems quickly and accurately; to working as a bank teller learning about the financial side of things. Although corporate America was not unbearable I knew that this was only temporary.
In 2015, while pregnant with my son, I began to notice how non existent the selection of boy clothes were. I found it extremely difficult to find affordable yet fashionable clothes for my son. After a few years of research, I then decided to create my own. In late October 2018, I established my brand.
Unykhe, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Unykhe (Unique) Edwards, the sole owner/creative director of Kulture Clothing Company. My brand offers handmade cut and sew pieces made from our manufacturer warehouse – in which we ship worldwide! We offer unisex children’s streetwear style clothing. Kulture Clothing Company gives parents a place to shop for clothes with affordable yet fashionable clothes. Most of our items are 1 of 1 pieces, unless requested back my popular demand.
Though, we have had many setbacks -It has been far from a smooth ride but I wouldn’t change a thing. The obstacles I’ve faced has gotten me to where I am today. I am most proud of the audience I’ve gained.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is where 98% of my sales have come from. I found it extremely helpful to have a brand rep program, in which I offer such reps a great discount in exchange for reels and product images. Having social media influencers represent your brand can help reach an audience you’ve may not been able to do solely on your own.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In early 2020 when Covid first took a tole, so did my business! I decided to take a year break, which turned out to be exactly what I needed. During those 12 months I went back to the drawing board – it was time to re-brand and recreate. Since returning from a complete rebrand, of course I lost customers but I did indeed gain as well. With sales starting to increase and social media accounts continuing to grow – We were featured in our very first fashion show! Myself and my team have been fortunate enough to host several events to give back to the community. Also, my brand is now available for purchase inside a local store. Located at The City Foundry St Louis Inside of HUSTL3 C1T4/ Sancitioned.
