We recently connected with Uni Kin and have shared our conversation below.
Uni, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
Im a unicorn so being understood on first impression is unusual anyways! Throughout my life I have noticed for some strange reason it is hard for me to fit in with the average crowd but I was never shameful. I always took pride into being an unusual character. I thought it was cool!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born an artist. I was the only child growing up so my imagination ran wild! Sometimes it would run overboard! I finally accepted that I wanted to be a recording artist when I was in college at Georgia State University. With that gift I believed it would be a good foundation to gather all my talents under one roof. I can dance sing draw paint design and so much more. Art meant a lot to me so I knew there was nothing else I would be happy doing besides being an artist. I also have a cosmetic & clothing line in the works as well for my true unicorns!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yea to destroy the term “starving artist” every artist deserves recognition and with my mission I will create a way for all of us to be respected.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Not sure if you would call this a lesson but while in college I discovered my ego. Never knew it was there all along until one day something clicked in my mind that made me realize I’m not happy with who I have presented myself to be. I have always jumped into a certain persona every single time just because I thought that’s what I was supposed to do but when I’m done talking to people I’d feel so exhausted. I had an awakening that if I keep being this fake person people will always believe that that’s who I am so I found myself always reverting to that fake version of me due to the expectations of others. I was in college and realized none of these people know me , this isn’t my hometown anymore so honestly who cares??? That is the day I laid my ego to rest
