We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Uncle Pooché a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Uncle , thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Happiness as a creative is something that we all strive to achieve but I feel is always misunderstood.
Am I happy to earn a living as a creative?
Short answer -Yes.
I am always happy with my day job as a creative.
Short answer -No.
But isn’t that normal? I feel all humans have a love/hate relationship with their jobs and being a paid creative is no different.
Since I started my content creator career in my late 20’s , I knew what it felt like to experience a “regular job” before becoming a full-time creative.
To be honest, it was the pitfalls of that “regular job” that thrust me into pursuing a career change.
I have the utmost respect for all levels of work, but I can honestly admit that a “regular job” was never a great fit for my personality.
I traded in my office space – for a creative pace 4 years ago and although the pay is not always the best; I can happily admit that I enjoy my career on the good days and bad days.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
“I am the 5’9 host with Sophisticated Ignorance… Uncle Pooché!
(Pronounced Poo-Shay) because it’s French.”
I was born in Memphis, TN but moved around a lot- so much so that by the age of 14 I had already attended 6 different schools and lived in 4 different states.
From a young age- I never truly cared for labels and never wanted to have one placed upon me.
In my younger years, I was what one would label an “athlete” due to my background playing football- but I never liked how people seemed to only admire me for my athletic abilities and not my personality.
As I got older, people would consider me somewhat funny- but I never liked to be labeled the office “funny guy”.
I guess that’s why I knew marketing and content creation was my dream job – but I don’t like being called a “Content Creator” Therefore I consider myself a “Concept Creator”, since my artwork and craft do not conform to one genre or type of work.
As a Concept Creator, I currently work with a group of brands to help conceptualize Marketing Tools, SOP, and Brand Strategies that will help increase the company’s sales ROI’s while netting a positive customer experience.
In layman’s terms – I get paid to come up with cool ideas that better make the company some money or I get fired.
I’d love to say that I have a cool story – that helped place in me this position but I can’t say that my come-up was very eventful- as it was more about timing and luck.
After doing stand-up comedy in Sacramento, CA for 2 years, I felt it was time to move back to Los Angeles and take a chance on myself doing something that I wanted to do.
I had moved to LA ten years before play football at the legendary El Camino College – but at this point in my life, I can fully admit that this was a mistake.
Although, I enjoyed my time and met good people- I simply was not ready for all the grit & grind it takes to make it in LA.
Fast forward 10 years later it’s 2021 and I felt it was time to take on LA again- but for reasons I cared for.
Moving back to LA would have ended in chaos – if I was never able to become the luckiest guy in the world.
Unbeknownst to me, this luck had started two years prior on a dating app when I met my future fiancé Amanda.
Her ambitions to find a change of scenario and break into the stand-up comedy scene led her to leave Sacramento a year before me.
Within that year, she worked and saved until she was able to put away a decent amount of money that would help support both of our content careers while I was unemployed.
To repay her – I can openly admit I flung myself into an overdrive of some sort- going on a hot strike of creating content.
At my peak, I was creating and posting 3 commentary videos a day on Instagram, 3-5 podcast episodes a week, and doing stand-up comedy at whatever club would accept me.
The results?
Well within one year I found myself receiving my first brand deal which was enough to help Amanda Lynn and I get our first apartment together.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
There is no such thing as the “perfect time” because opportunities do not call your cell phone before they enter your life.
During my undergraduate days at the University of California- Davis; I often told myself that I was waiting for the perfect time to start my clothing brand.
Unfortunately, the perfect time never came – and therefore I never started that clothing brand.
During the earlier stages of my standup comedy career I told myself I was working on jokes for my “perfect set” – and decided not to invite my visiting Aunt Celestine out to see me perform; because I wanted her to see me with “perfect timing”.
Unfortunately, that perfect set never came – as she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away two years ago.
One week you’re “Swag Surfin” next week you’re giving up meat to help lower your cholesterol.
That being said, please take time to embrace your good days – honor the bad days, but please don’t let either of these days stop you from accomplishing your life’s goals.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I owe all that I have to collaboration and my teamwork with others.
I’d love to front and tell you how I was so talented and had all the skill sets needed to go viral all on my own- but this isn’t the truth, not for me; not for anyone.
I know the saying is cliché but “team-work makes the dream work” and it does.
Once I started to collaborate with other like-minded content creators my following steadily started to increase.
Now, let me make myself clear this was no easy feat- collaboration with the right content creator(s) is very important.
I have had my share of mistakes- attempting to collaborate with creators who wanted to just utilize the opportunity to grow their content and nothing else.
Although I find nothing wrong with this- I just would rather work with people who want to see both parties organically grow.
So whenever I am asked “How do I grow my audience? – I simply let people know that my secret to success is simple; you have to learn how to collaborate with others.
Collaboration helps your content reach audiences in places where you may not exist yet – while also assisting a fellow content creator in the same manner.
That being said I am eternally thankful for content creators such as Megan Better, The host from the Memeing Of It All Podcast, my homies from the Textually Active Podcast and last but not least my favorite content creator, my fiancé Amanda Lynn aka “The Aunt.
If I didn’t have the online support from these people- I would have never had the courage to continue my content career. I owe all that I have to collaboration and my teamwork with others.
