We were lucky to catch up with Uncle Flood recently and have shared our conversation below.
Uncle, appreciate you joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I suppose the one thing I do differently than the majority of other artists in the industry is creating music with no expectation of reward other than the joy of creating the music itself. In other words, I try to keep the work as unadultered from outside influence as possible. This way the true essence of the song is the focal point.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve written songs for as long as I can remember but, it was only in the last few years living in Nashville TN that I became what I would consider “a relevent writer.” My goal in life is to create joy through song to inspire the hearts of intelligent people. I know that may sound strange, but it makes more sense if you’re a thinker. Out of it all however, I am most proud and thankful for all of the incredible people I’ve met, worked, and laughed with. When you’re surrounded by amazingly talented, qenuinly kind artists all the time, it’s very hard to not be happy.
Have you ever had to pivot?
There have been many pivot points in my career. One that stands out the most is my move to Nashville. From the most rural parts of the Arkansas Ozarks to the city, as quaint as Nashville is, was a huge change for me. This was the first time after 20 years of writing songs that I dove head first into creating. My debut album “Revelation” produced by Jonny Lucas at Round Corner Studios was swiftly recorded and released. We made two really cool music videos for “Never in My Life” and “Feel Like Man”;two post album singles. This year we have another full length album to release called “Visions.” That should start coming out in early summer. We are very excited about this one. It’s amazing what one can accomplish when they put their mind to it.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
In my experience there is only one way to fund such a venture. When you don’t have money, you have time. Time is money. Wiith lots of elbow grease and 80 hours a week, it will pay off in the long run.
