We recently connected with Uma Mehta and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Uma thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which is one of the wealthiest and most privileged places to grow up in America. I was born into a family that always had enough. My Strict Indian family worked hard and became upper middle class by the time I was a teenager. I was always given everything that I needed, and I never wanted for anything. My childhood was wonderful and privileged. However, my parents were not in support of my artistic and creative dreams. They did not believe that this would make money and were adamantly against me pursuing the career that is actually right for me. I am an artist, and a healing artist at that. I am great at drawing, painting, singing, sound healing, dancing, fashion, design, performance, creative direction, event production, counseling, holistic, and alternative healing modalities, natural medicine, plant medicine, healing arts, etc.
I truly believe that taking risks in life is important because I risked losing my financial privileges to find myself and become who I really am. I risked marrying for love instead of money and I’m happily married when I see divorce all around me. At the end of the day I have someone to come home to who truly loves and cares about me and will grow and be with me for certain, forever. That’s true value. My husband was experiencing financial issues because of his upbringing when I met him. But it was a risk I took easily because having love is more important and money comes as a result of a proper foundation, which is a loving family.
I am glad that I took the risk to quit college and go out and travel by myself, in order to learn from experience, as well as find out what I really am supposed to be and do in the world. I went to Hawaii and the West Coast and lived in intentional, alternative, holistic, spiritual, creative, free-thinking communities. I learned how to fast because I had no food and that is a huge asset to my health and skill set. learned how to heal, how to be in relationships, how to be a real human; happy, free, connected to nature and one’s inner self. I learned many things from living in pure nature for months, on the beach, in a food forest, and with people seeking only God. I risked my safety by going out alone and trusting strangers. I would not recommend it but I’m glad I did it. I did not always remain safe from these strangers, but even then, I still wouldn’t change a thing. Here’s why: Everything I’ve been through, whether it is poverty, being the black sheep of the family, sexism, racism, and sexual assault, it has all made me who I am today and has made me stronger, more aware, more compassionate, and more able to help others with all sorts of levels of issues because I have been through them myself. I learned the art of true healthy and happy living, massage, meditation, hypnotherapy, yoga, holistic medicine, and the arts. They saved me from my intense traumas like being sexually assaulted over 10 times and then living in the poverty for years as a result. Now I can help others to take the right risks in their life and heal from the poor risks they may have already taken. Having Emotional and Mental Bravery in life is paramount because if I had not veered from the ‘normal’ or mainstream path and risked my normal life, security, acceptance from my peers, family, and society, then I wouldn’t be the person that I am today- with the unique perspective, expertise, and experience that will change the world for the better in a way no one else can.
Not everything is able to be learned in college. Sometimes you have to go out into the world and experience things and find out what is right and what is wrong for you specifically. Because everyone is unique and special and so is everyone’s life purpose.
My sister listened to my parents when they told her to pursue being a doctor because it would be financially secure. I took a Financial risk by pursuing healing, the truth, and my real dreams, even though that may not have made me financially wealthy. I will obtain my wealth and change the world with it because that’s my destiny. But the rich experiences, the rare awareness and knowledge, and the important perspective I have under my belt, is priceless. My compassion and understanding for all levels, classes, and types of people, including animals and nature is extremely important in this world.
I followed my heart instead of what my parents or society believed was right for me. Because I did this, I found a wonderful husband, healing for my trauma, and the skills and knowledge I need to live an amazing and inspiring life. I have rare and important skills that this world needs. I found my True Self and know what my True Life Purpose is.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

That’s why we are setting aside any funds coming in to our business to doing exactly that. Because everyone deserves to be able to experience healing, health, and happiness, which we can help to provide.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I have a great many stories that illustrate my resilience. I have been through over 10 different experiences of sexual assault including being raped of my virginity at 17 and being drugged and gang raped on the streets at 19. I lived in my van and was homeless for years. I had no family support and no one to tell. But I breathed through it, I meditated through it, I sang through it, I danced and I laughed through it. I cried through it, and I made peace with my past. I polarized positive and became stronger and better because of it.
I am here today even though I could have died. I am healed and happy with myself. I have a rare loving husband who was celibate with me for 9 years because he is wise, disciplined, and because he cares. That is rare. I may not be a millionaire yet, but I have experiences, skills, and perspectives that are important for the world. And, in part because of the hardships, I am a good, kind, compassionate, and caring human being. At the end of the day, I believe that is what matters most.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think that there has been a long-standing societal mentality of the starving artist. I think that this perception of artists come from a lack of value of what art is actually bringing to the table. Artists are Creators. Creativity is what solves problems. Plus, Everything is art. From the houses we live in, to the cups we drink from, to the clothes we wear, to the food we eat. Creation is life, but our society does not financially reward creation like it should. If society truly valued the beauty, the message, the meaning, and the functional importance that art brings to the world, artists would be better funded, and the world would be a more beautiful, meaningful, fun, wonder-filled, and emotionally free place. The fact that society more readily funds sports, science, and even things that aren’t valuable at all above the arts has made the people in the world less happy.
Nature is God’s art, and that lovely tree, the river, the breeze, this is life. I believe good art helps connect us back to these best feelings we can find. Good artists are making the world a better place by inspiring us with possibilities, a new perspective, and a feeling of immense beauty- reminding us about the good and true things, the most important things in life, what makes life worth living. What Society can do is make the space in the budgeting to allot funds to the arts so creators can have the space and resources to create the best possible, truly important works of art so we can all experience beauty, entertainment, and inspiration that changes the world for the better.
