We were lucky to catch up with Udo Ebulu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Udo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?
She has a heart of gold, and a special place in my heart. A little over a year after I graduated from college, I had yet to land a solid job. My staffing agent landed an interview for me with PBS and I was super excited.
Prior to the interview I was nervous. When I met my soon-to-be boss for the first time my nervousness slowly faded away. She had such a sweet and calming aura to her. She created a peaceful mood, putting me at ease throughout. When my agent informed me that I got the job I was ecstatic.
On my first day of work, my boss welcomed me with the same positive energy from the interview. I’m several months into the job and I’m loving it, mainly because of her. She never felt too big to extend first greetings to me and everyone. She always appreciated me whenever I did a good job. She was patient with me during training and uplifted me whenever I made a mistake.
She was always very kind to me. It felt too good to be true, yet genuine at the same time. I just couldn’t figure out why. A new lady coworker joined the team, observed my relationship with our boss and explained it to me. She said that our boss has a lot of respect for me. Then I realized, my boos never judged me, and she believed in me from the beginning. It was one of the most fulfilling realizations of my life.
She was the ideal boss that anyone could hope for. Through her humility she showed me what great leadership looks like. It’s about creating a positive atmosphere for your team and uplifting them at every opportunity.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a second-generation Nigerian. I first wanted to be a successful actor. However, I didn’t have any acting experience to land any roles yet, so I decided to create my own films in order to create experience for myself. Through the process of creating films and organizing projects, I realized that I have a knack for writing and producing. I grew so fond of it that I decided to make it my career.
I have an everlasting eagerness and unique ability to learn that sets me apart from other people. I am self-aware of my ego to make sure that it never gets too big because it will stunt my overall growth. I am very proud of how far I’ve come and my resolve to take on and conquer challenges. I want for people to feel inspired by the projects that I create through media.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Respect is reciprocal. Respect yourself and everyone on your team and they will respect you in return. Maintaining composure in the face of adversity is key to overcoming it. If you show panic, your team will panic. Patience is a virtue. If you can exercise patience with your team it will make the learning process for them easier. Have a positive attitude and energy, it starts and ends with you (the leader). If you have a bad attitude, you will discourage your team from being successful. If you give off a negative energy, it will have a domino effect on your team. Last but not least, have fun. Time flies when fun is being had.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
“The Truth about Leadership” by Barry Posner and James M. Kouzes. This book enlightened me on the concept of leadership, what character traits make a great leader, and how to lead to great success.
