We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tzipora Zidell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tzipora thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
I was working as a paralegal for 10 years. I felt it was time to move on to a career that I am passionate about. I had a hard time figuring out what to do. At around that time I helped a friend move out of state on short notice. She said I should do this as a business because I have a natural talent to organize. I realized my natural talents and passion could be used to help many others – not only move but organize their day-to-day life.
Since I am a single mom of three kids, I needed a steady income. Therefore I couldn’t just leave my paralegal job and open my business cold turkey. I had an amazing boss who let me slowly cut back my hours as I got more organizing clients and grew. In the evenings, I slowly created my business, one small piece at a time. In April 2019 I opened up my organizing LLC – Declutter Together, LLC. I created my website, opened a business bank account and started networking. Slowly I started building up my clientele and cut back more and more hours from my paralegal job until organizing became full time.
A year or two after we opened, I realized it would be beneficial for my clients and business if we had a team of organizers. We would be able to help more people and get out of the clients house faster with faster results. . We now have multiple organizers working with me, all who brings amazing talent, passion and energy to all our awesome clients. We are continuously looking to improve, learn and grow.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We help people from all walks of life organize their homes and lifes. We put a customized system in place that they can upkeep. We recommend organizing products, help with donations and strategize ways they can maintain their organized home.
No organizing job is too big or too small. We can send one organizer to you or a team of organizers. We can organize anything from a coat closet to a huge basement full from floor to ceiling. We believe every person and family is unique. Therefore, there is no cookie cutter organizing solution. We organize different Depending on family dynamics – handicap, kids, elderly parents etc
Depends on personality – Do you like to see everything then we will suggest open clear bins vs someone who gets stressed when they see everything we will suggest non clear bins (definitely labeled 😊 )
It also Depends on the size of the home and amount of stuff
If the client is planning on moving soon.
Some ppl like to reminisce on their stuff, some just wants to quickly get
rid of stuff…
Everything is customized for you, your home and your personality. We love helping people find simple solutions to make life easier.
Many ppl feel bad and guilty that they need help with organizing. I want
to tell everyone out there, they really should not feel bad. 1. e/o has a
different talent. I can organize but you can do something else that I have a
hard time doing etc. Spend your time wisely doing you, what u r good at.. 2.
We live in a society of so much. Of buy 1 get 1 free, of buying in bulk, of
having large homes – which is only natural to fill. 3. Many times we get
disorganized bec we are going through a transition of any type -covid,
transition to working at home, sick family member, marriage, combining
households, baby, move- their home spirals into chaos. We are already so
busy so any change can throw our home off kilter if there is no organizing
systems in place. Sometimes we need a little help to get us on the right path.
We all deserve to love our homes. 4. Procrastination can also create clutter. Its a form of indecision, many times due to emotional discomfort. We help walk you through the emotionals and approach the situation from a more logical perspective.
There are so many benefits to being organized.
It Saves so much time. Decluttering can save 40% of our house work. Imagine you want to cook but the counter is full of clutter. It can take more time to clear the counter than to cook the simple quick meal! Searching for lost items causes stress. Part of Being organized is having set places for our items so we do not need to search.
If we cut out extra-curricular activites we don’t really enjoy, we will enjoy life more and be more productive – We can’t say yes to every opportunity. We need to realize yes to 1 thing is no to something else.
Being organized Saves $ . When we know what we have we will not buy doubles, and have food expires etc. In addition, americans spend around $40 billion annually on storing items that they will most likely not use again in storage facilites
60% admit not inviting ppl bec shame. When you are organized, you can have pride when hosting instead of cringing and being embarresed.
Ppl in cluttered homes feel stress, resentment, shame frustration. More
stuff = more mental clutter
When we feel in control of our space, we feel more in control of our
lives, which increases self-esteem and self-production and
accomplishments
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honesty, being upbeat and giving each of our clients our all. In addition customizing the organizing to fit the clients need where they are in life.
Any advice for managing a team?
Open communication, being honest and Giving out lots of compliments. Understanding what each team member is good at and let them do that. for exmaple If a team members favorite room to organize is a kitchen, then I will try to give them clients who want their kitchen organized etc
